I'm pretty sure that when you enter the reserve, they warn you not to make eye contact with the silverback or sudden moves. I forget where I read it, but there have been cases where a silverback felt the humans were getting too close and charge, but if the person turned his/her back to the gorilla and stayed out, they avoided being killed or hurt. I'll try to see if I can find more info.

The sheer physical power of these animals must be overwhelming when you're upclose. All your DANGER flags and alarms must be on overdrive. The fact that they were coming from behind was certainly not adding to the guy's comfort. But then again, I can't imagine what eye contact would have felt like in this situation.
