What brought you to Atheist Universe?
I'm a semi-retired electrical engineer who has a rather eclectic background, never mind a few miles on the odometer. I suppose I was an "apatheist" for quite a while - largely indifferent to the whole issue of gods - but after 9/11 and the more blatant appearance of evangelicals and Dominionists on the scene, my atheism has finally come to the fore.

Other interests include music, especially classical, high-end stereo and home theater (and with that, CD and DVD collecting), enthusiasm for cars and motoring, single-malt whisky and biking.

The Red Herring of Spirituality

Posted on June 2, 2021 at 8:40am 0 Comments

The following is an old blog from Atheist Nexus, around October of 2015.  I think the topic material is still very relevant to the here and now, though.

=============================

How many times have we heard it?  “I’m not religious, but I am spiritual.”  To this day, while the intent if not the meaning of that phrase is at least vaguely understood, there should be another way to express it.  I suspect that a goodly number of the people on this planet have…

Then What Are You For?

...they [the Roman Catholic Church] for example thought that slavery was perfectly fine... absolutely okay, and then they didn't, and what is the point of the Catholic Church if it says, “oh well we couldn't know better because nobody else did”? [To the affirmative team] Then what are you for?!

-- Stephen Fry, answering a question during the 2009 Intelligence Squared debate, “Is the Catholic Church a force for good in the world?”

Of course, slavery was okay…

A Difference In One Word

Posted on April 1, 2021 at 7:01am 1 Comment

Words are subtle and powerful things.  Ten billion different things can be said with words, from rage to romance, with a multidimensional gradient of meanings and emotions in between those two markers.  There are big words and small words out there: tiny little one- and two- and three- and four-letter words which will be a first-grader’s initial exposure to language learning, then two- and three- and four- and five-syllable verbal jaw breakers which will be the attention-getters, that mark…

A Shot In The Arm

Posted on March 1, 2021 at 12:00pm 12 Comments

For a while, there, it was an absolute truism that among the single most frustrating activities one could indulge in was the pursuit of an appointment to obtain a COVID-19 vaccination.  Starting roughly at the beginning of February, I got myself registered with three different pharmacies, plus two hospital chains (University Hospitals and Cleveland Clinic).  Add to that, I was checking regularly with at least two other drug stores which didn’t have automated registration or informational…

The big 70. But  Loren it's not the numerical age that matters it's your fitness.

And from what I can see you look very healthy, long may it continue that way.

Many happy returns. Stephen
