I had to stay nearly two weeks, as they kept postponing the final march, waiting for more participants to show up. An African American family was kind enough to put me up for that time, though they did so at great danger to themselves. Their older daughter was in the original attempt to cross the Edmond Pettus Bridge, depicted below, in which the people were tear-gassed and beaten by deputies on horseback.

I thought the movie, "Selma," handled it quite realistically, even to the point of showing the one-legged marcher, if only in the background. I was on the same highway, returning from Montgomery to Selma with a carload of Black kids when Mrs. Viola Liuzzo was brutally murdered while driving under the same circumstances.

Sadly, listening to the radio, driving back to my home state from what I considered a triumph of non-violence in Alabama, the story of Watts broke in Los Angeles, with violence to spare.

archaeopteryx You were in Selma in 1965 wow to talk to someone who took part in one of the seminal events of the civil rights struggle. Fantastic

I never met Amelia Platts Boynton Robinson while I was in Selma in 1965, although I quite likely saw her and simply didn't know who she was.
