We are a worldwide social network of freethinkers, atheists, agnostics and secular humanists.

Most theists and their apologists most often write that without the belief in god, life is meaningless and they go ahead and ask people to surrender everything to their supposed gods.

You are likely to find a theist write

When we surrender our lives to God and decide to follow Jesus we give up our rights to live our lives the way we want to. We give up the right to be in control. For most the idea of giving up control of your life is a real sticking point. But think about it for a minute. If God has made everything, then he owns everything and all that we have is because of his providence in our lives. Oh, sure we’d like to think that what we have is based on our efforts but when you boil it down to its essence, you have what you have because God has given it to you.

One is left to wonder at what time in our collective history did servitude become a badge of honour to be brandished everywhere!

In this post, I explore some this topic and the problem of evil and why the reasons or justifications that are given by the apologists are inadequate to deal with the problems under investigation.

When I think of God, I think it's the crazy notion that religious people have.

I spent a while looking through thesauruses and didn't see a good word to replace "Slave". They all are equally inaccurate. "Subjects" sort of stood out, but that isn't a very good descriptive either.

Slave is a lousy term, but if you have a master that has to be obeyed, I'm not sure what other word to use.

Comment by Onyango Makagutu on May 21, 2013 at 2:26pm

I get you Neal. That is indeed an interesting observation, they claim to have free will, which this god has given them and in the same breadth give god all powers including that of thinking! One then wonders why did they need free will in the first place or is it a badge of honour?

I agree Chris that slave may not be the best term to use especially since slaves are coerced into being slaves but where a person chooses serfdom as the highest virtue, slavery is indeed an understatement.

Comment by Chris on May 21, 2013 at 2:07pm
I don't think slave is the right term to use to describe someone who's turned their mind over to the control of another, or others. Maybe subject would be better, but I think that's too soft. What would be a better term to use for the people who willingly submitted to Jim Jones at Jonestown, or the multiple wives of a Mormon polygamist?

Chris - Good comment. Though I think acting like a slave makes you one, whether the master is real or not.

Onyango - I don't mean to say that humans as a whole treat their children as slaves, I mean that if god is their role model, and god expects you to be a non-thinking automaton, then maybe they think it is best for their children to not think and obey as well.

Comment by Onyango Makagutu on May 21, 2013 at 3:00am

I don't know whether we treat our children as slaves and we their slave masters. Maybe it is the case, maybe it isn't but I do think to enslave someone's mind in such a way as to think they exist for a god is depressing.

In replay to Michel's comment; It's common to hear "god willing" at the end of sentences about future event planning in some Islamic countries.
Believing in god and living your life under the ideologies taught by religious institutions and books is basing your life on a lie. Unlike a slave who listens to a real person, the godbots turn control over to nothing - let the chips fall where they may and give credit to god when things go well. It's a convenient way to absolve ones self of responsibility while trying to avoid being human which is a sin and therefore a direct route to hell unless you turn yourself over to charlatans who will convince you to listen to their advice to escape that terrible eternal punishment.
Comment by Neal on May 20, 2013 at 9:04pm

Claudia - What would tempt someone to be irrational? I agree that it is a destructive belief, just curious about the phrasing.

Onyango - I guess being a slave is meaningful? Is meaning then treating our children as slaves also? What the heck meaning is there when you allow someone else to make all the decisions for you.

Oh Michel, that is a good one, IF festivals....

why for instance should a believer start their statements with if god.... unless it is a proposition they don't take seriously!

I agree Hope, we could suggest the deist god for them but I am not sure they will like it.

Comment by Michel on May 15, 2013 at 3:07pm

I call those exchanges IF Festivals.

"If God has made everything..."

IF reality does not matter THEN anything goes.
