Oppose the Appointment of Amy Coney Barrett

I just sent the following to Ohio Republican Senator Rob Portman, by email and physical letter:

26 September, 2020

Senator Rob Portman
448 Russell Senate Office Building
Washington, DC 20510

Senator Portman:

I am writing you to insist that you do not under any circumstances endorse or vote for the appointment of Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court of the United States. Please understand, as a non-religious American, it is not her Catholicism that I object to; she has an absolute right to that. However, her apparent intended application of that belief system to the laws of this country would be a blatant violation of the Establishment Clause of the Constitution, and she has made it clear in her previous statements that such is her intention.

My friends at the Freedom From Religion Foundation make this case far better than I could. Allow me to defer to them:

Barrett has made it clear that everything, including the law, is a means to promoting her personal religion and the “Kingdom of God.”

“If Barrett is confirmed, she will unquestionably eviscerate the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment,” warn FFRF Co-Presidents Dan Barker and Annie Laurie Gaylor. “Many of our other hard-won freedoms would also likely be gutted.”

Barrett has made statements indicating that her religion would trump her oath of office. Barrett co-authored an article in 1998 about the conflict of Catholic dogma and the law, which, she wrote, can put “Catholic judges in a bind.” The article was couched in terms of judges recusing themselves from death penalty cases, but she added: “The prohibitions against abortion and euthanasia (properly defined) are absolute; those against war and capital punishment are not.”

In short, she wants to elevate her god’s law above the law of the land. Pardon me, but for a secular government to do so should be utterly intolerable. Our government is secular so that no one religion has any advantage over any other and so all can be treated EQUALLY. To do otherwise would be to create a second-class citizenry out of anyone who didn’t hold to Ms. Barrett’s beliefs, and that should be equally unsupportable.

Certainly, Ms. Barrett will be nominated and should have her hearing, but her positions on these critical issues are severely contrary to the nature of this nation’s laws and must not be supported. Do NOT allow her to attain a seat on the Supreme Court.

Sincerely,

Loren C. Miller, Jr.

Thanks a lot, Stephen.  Sadly, Portman hasn't listened to me at all in the past and his tendency toward deferral to Trump is damned near as reliable as the sun rising in the east.

Interesting story, though: as I drove to the post office to mail it, I saw a house on the way, decked out in "Biden / Harris" signs and a collection of people around.  Turns out it was a local Democratic official, making signs available for donation.  I stopped by and bought a sign and got a reservation for a BLACK LIVES MATTER sign as well.  I also let them know what I had just done and encouraged them to emulate my action.

If there is any consolation in all this mess, it is the palpable sense that I AM NOT ALONE ... and that helps a lot.

Spot on letter Loren both your part and the FFRF section. Let us hope that all secular minded citizens follow suit and write of their concerns about Amy Coney Barrett not just about her intention to scrap Roe V Wade but also in the hypocritical way they intend to push through the nomination just five weeks before the election. As I said, well done Loren.
