December 2011 Blog Posts (24)

The GOP is the Greatest Threat to Humanity.

I posted an article recently that stated a similar thought about the Republican Party except for one exception. They used the word “may.” That term has been gnawing at my thoughts since I read the article. Why do liberals, when stating a fact, hide their real thoughts? There is no “may” in this thought. Here we are, getting closer and closer to a very…

Faith Does Not Require Proof

I think its funny that people of religious faith tend to try and prove their position. They get so angry when I show them evidence to the contrary even using their own bible to defeat their arguments - they especially hate it when I do that.

"You don't even believe the bibles the 'word of God' why are you using it to argue against…

The Girlfriend

I was seeing this girl who was kind of odd; she had pen nibs instead of nipples.

During sex she'd write things in blue all over my duvet. The first night she wrote: The ironsmith fashions it and works it over the coals, he shapes it with hammers and forges it with his strong arm: he becomes hungry and his strength fails, he drinks no

The second night she wrote: water and is faint. The carpenter stretches a line, he marks it out with a…

A Thought Experiment – On Morality

Just wrote this over on my blog and would love to get some feedback on it :)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

The world we live in, as perceived by our brains, is not one of absolutes. In fact, while some things seem to be fairly certain propositions or realities, the fact that it’s all interpreted by our brains as individuals means that the way each human views our world will differ, even if only slightly. There are some fairly certain…

Ignorant Islam

I’m starting to get quite scared of the level of willful ignorance found within the vocal members of Islam. Yes I know, some of you will say “Yes but don’t judge all Muslims by the voices of the few loud people.” Well I don’t. In fact the only Muslims I judge are those with influence who willingly spread the ignorant nature of their religion with hate-speak and misinformation. The rest are just people, and shall be judged by the merits of their actions. These vocal spokespeople of Islam (and…

A Solstice Story

Nothing religious, nothing about atheism, nothing about politics, no song, no verse; just a little bit of humor for your new year. I started off titling this a "Trio of Solstice Stories," but who has time to read a novella? This was subtitled, "The Party Girl."

While employed as an air traffic controller, I had contact with many of…

Why do I hate the word group...

For me, to be part of a group is the ultimate insult...  though, when my emotions cool down a bit I must admit that I am a part of the human race and a female...  Well, I still have problems with that but won't argue about it because it's so self-evident.

But then, when I think of belonging to any group I rebell... Maybe it's the adolescent in me ? but I'm not so sure because for one one I've always been apart and also most people feel some kind of kinship factor to something or…

COMPULSIVE BUYING TIME

I think it's definitely the right time of the year to look at compulsive buying. Also, I guess any kind of compulsive behavior has some kind of inner dark side...I would even hazard that in compulsive buying it's buying oneself some kind of protection ?

Compulsive buyers are supposedly, and I would think so too, generally women, but just off the top of my head I can think of a man who is well known for his compulsive buying, Elton John. Well maybe he was a star and all that,…

The Trouble with Theists

The holiday season can be a trying time for atheists. Jesus is in your face constantly. Even in my little town the one and only billboard proudly displays the message that we should, “Keep Christ in Christmas.” That nonsense is paid for by our local catholic church and partners.

Some of the local businesses proudly display on their signs, “God Bless,”…

Cancer

The kid had a fever of 101.2 an hour ago, after having a transfusion this afternoon. We have to call the on duty doctor whenever it's over 100.5, if his white blood cell count is down, which it is. It's like zero now. So Char and Dev just left to go back to the hospital. I was really hoping for a weekend with the family at home. Is that so selfish?

This is always scary. Basically what happened to Hitch is that he succumbed to pneumonia because the cancer treatment destroyed all…

Science at Atheist Universe

“And here is the point, about myself and my co-thinkers. Our belief is not a belief. Our principles are not a faith. We do not rely solely upon science and reason, because these are necessary rather than sufficient factors, but we distrust anything that contradicts science or outrages reason. We may differ on many things, but what we respect is free inquiry,…

The curious disappearance of a Bookstore

It sprang out of nowhere in this middle size city, nestled against two other shops and apart from its outside sign, Bookstore, nobody would have thought twice about it. Another bookstore on a street full of bookstores, of tiny handmade jewelley or gifts shops, a few second hand records and dvd little stores, lots of hair salons; all different little stores intersped with coffee shops, bars, and maybe exotic restaurant for this marginal neighbourhood.

So, the owners knowing…

Individuals right to Discriminate?

Does an individual have the right to be sexist and racist? Do they have the right to hate homosexuals and preach against them? Do they have the right to call Atheists non-americans and immoral people? Do they have the right to deny any marriage as being valid in the eyes of "god" based on whatever criteria they see fit? And the right to deny homosexuals from being married in their churches? You damn right they…

HOW HECTOR BELLEVANCE CAME TO BE

For those here who have asked about my recent fiction, let me post a short piece I wrote for my Web site about the series.

Hector Bellevance is the hero/sleuth and narrator/main character of my contemporary literary suspense series set in the fictional small town of Tipton in Vermont's northeast corner, hard by the border with Quebec. The series consists of three novels, COLD COMFORT (2001), THE FIFTH SEASON (2005), and THE ERRAND BOY (2009). Over the past ten years,…

regarding toilet humor.

Fellow atheists. I have not seen the debated clip about toilets, but would still like to share a thought about the subject with you. Let's not forget that the bathroom, as you prefer to put it over there, is a part of the human habitat. We must not be afraid to enter this domain when the urge to give pooh calls upon us. The function of our digestive system sometimes calls for swift action. In Sweden this is less complicated. We have no need to make up strange excuses. The phrase "I will no…

This is how Charles Darwin closed the first edition of The Origin of the Species: There is grandeur in this view of life, with its several powers, having been originally breathed into a few forms or into one; and that, whilst this planet has gone cycling on according to the fixed law of gravity, from so simple a…
