Dreams of Liars

I have wondered what it is that religious leaders get out of the nonsense they spout. Is there a prize for the idiot that comes up with the most outlandish story? It is hard for me to think that every priest, pastor or whatever, believes in the nonsense he spouts. Churches should be labeled as social networking groups and capitalists and not be classified as anything…

Completely Random Weird Stuff

Another installment of completely random newsbits with which I contend that improbable stuff constantly happen.

■ Scotland Yard detectives said they overestimated the number of dead in a fiery London commuter-train crash in October because some survivors had walked away quickly and left town, spontaneously deciding to start new lives.…

Take My Hand

I've recently been entrenched in a discussion about unions and how horrible they are for society. A debate that is unmoderated, a debate where all the worst logical fallacies are employed. Well, I guess not all, but to give you the flavor of the idiocy; yes, Hitler has come up.

I guess it's not that bad, ad homs are the worst of the discussion. I lost…

Never Never Land

I've always enjoyed fantasy, light reading for a summer day. And yes, I enjoy creating my own world from the words of skilled authors. From those who can capture my imagination from those who have a vision, an idea that they pursue. During my life, Piers Anthony, Stephen Donaldson, Anne McCaffrey, David Eddings, Roger Zelazny, Ursula K Le Guin and…

The fire exit

You can end up once in a room full of doors and try to open each one of them but, they are all locked.  Are you in some kind of jail you wonder ?

The only way out is the fire exit. Looking at it makes you decide to take it whatever the consequences may be...

So now you're out in the open and see there are only two roads with signs above them.  One is a paved road that appears to have been used quite often bearing witnesses of many grooves marks upon it and a…

An Atheist's prayer?

I was thinking about all the little prayers that religious families recite throughout the day, such as: "Praise the Lord!", "god is watching", "bless you" & etc. and how they offer comfort to each other.  And, I realized that my family of ardent atheists, does pretty much the same.  But we don't acknowledge some deity.  Our prayer, nevertheless, is uttered to comfort each other in tough times, it's uttered when we're laughing, we say it when we're scared, and most times we just say it…

Website Called Meaningful Science but has a religious twist

http://www.meaningfulscience.com/index.html

"You need motivation to do science, and moral direction for applying technology to the real world. You also need to assume several basic things about reality and about yourself before using the scientific method. Christianity provides all of these things better than any other religious worldview, especially Atheism."

"Science comes from the Latin scientia, meaning “to…

The Advertising Age: Science

Thanks to advertising, science has become the new magic.

Hair, skin, the appearance of youth and the cleanliness of every little nook and cranny of your personal space are now under the watchful guard of scientific advances. If we were to believe modern advertisers, we're already in the twenty second century...

You don't actually need to understand how dirt and grime can be eliminated from your dishwasher, how you can regenerate old body parts with lotions, how "animated"…

Concerning morality

Lots has been written on the subject of morality and I just wanted to add my thoughts about the way it can be formed  for onesef.

First, I agree that morality is acquired and not just inherited. I also agree that children of any social background or any religious or ethnic backgrounds have not yet formed their own sense of morality... Maybe the seed has been sown then but it takes time to grow...

I don't equate at all morality and religion, but, (there is often a but…

The Advertising Age

The Advertising Age: A Sexist Primer

End of WW2, baby boom, the advertising age is in full swing, piggy-backing on the news media and shaping the public's burgeoning opinion of itself. A kind of quasi-magical what-would-be-best.

Ramadan

Each year, Muslims spend the ninth month of the Islamic calendar observing a community-wide fast. Muslims who are physically able are required to fast each day of the entire month, from sunrise to sunset. The evenings are spent with family and community meals, engaging in prayer and spiritual reflection, and reading from the Qu'ran.…

The Selfish American

I think that besides the religious leanings of the conservative right, another easily discerned driving force is greed. The easiest example of that is the conservative mantra that the rich must be made richer. No revenues from them, only low income and retired folks should bear that burden.

That is just a general observation of a large movement, so…
