I have been a quote collector and quote monger for at least as long as I have been an atheist, and likely much longer. There is a fascination in me of those who are sufficiently skilled in language that they structure words into concepts and ideas and proposed actions which grab my attention and interest, whether it is John F. Kennedy's unabashed statement: "We choose to go to the moon and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard," Robert A. Heinlein's blunt expression: "If you've got the truth, you can demonstrate it. Talking doesn't prove it. SHOW people," or Captain Kirk's subtle yet important tactical observation, having encountered and been challenged by the dauntingly huge First Federation vessel: "Not chess, Mr. Spock ... Poker!"
Certainly, atheism has had its share of skilled spokespeople, whose words have inspired and driven us, whether it was Madalyn Murray O'Hair, saying: "An Atheist believes that a hospital should be built instead of a church," or Sam Harris, who noted that: "The only problem with Islamic fundamentalism are the fundamentals of Islam," or Aron Ra's far more succinct: "If you can't SHOW it, you don't KNOW it."
Consciously or unconsciously, I suspect all of us have learned and grown from such words and many others, becoming stronger and more mature, not just in our atheism but in ourselves, having heard such words as these, and that is the point of this group: not to just deal in quotes which praise and promote atheism but which advance the cause of knowledge, self-understanding and self-ownership. Each of us have likely heard someone say something and think, "Wow!" and resonated to the significance of what they heard.
That's what I want to do here: share, learn, and grow, not just from THEIR words, but our own.

One suggestion for the main comment area of the group: Please keep your quotes to under 20 lines or 200 words. That way, one entry won't dominate a given page of the comment area. If you have a longer quote or speech which you think is significant, create a separate post in the group.
Please enjoy!

Nice Comment
Loren one thing I've noticed of the religious is the more pious they are the more that piety must be shown to everyone. When I was a kid and was being taught my catechism, praying was done silently but now, not only must they pray but that prayer must be overtly seen. It's almost like being religious is not enough being seen to be religious is all-important.
It's important to recognize worship for what it is: a response to threat.
-- TheraminTrees, "worshiping narcissists"
Worship and prayer both qualify here, especially prayer. On one's knees, hands folded together? THAT is the position of a SLAVE, whether believers want to admit it or not ... and it's no place you will find me, ever again.
Reason is the greatest enemy that faith has; it never comes to the aid of spiritual things, but — more frequently than not – struggles against the divine Word, treating with contempt all that emanates from God.
-- Martin Luther
It's actually worse than that, Marty ... because in a straight up confrontation, reason BEATS faith ... EVERY LAST TIME.
Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who are hungry and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed.
-- President Dwight D. Eisenhower
Ike's image has become more than a little tarnished in the interval from when I first encountered my dad's "I LIKE IKE" campaign button as a kid to having read Kevin M. Kruse's One Nation Under God: How Corporate America Invented Christian America. That doesn't change the fact that his statement here is on the nose ... and doubtless, nothing that Vladimir Putin even remotely considered when he decided to invade Ukraine.
Great observation, Davy, though a bit long (308 words!). Next time, please create a separate discussion, rather than posting it in the Comment Wall.
To quote part of the quote
Today evolution of human intelligence has advanced
Has it really when you Societal Structure has remained in the stone age!
Had your intelligence really advanced the structure of your Society would have also change as you adopted new societal ideas from the knowledge you gained.
That knowledge is all there to see not only in some of the so called religions that are based more on philosophy than religion, but also the various philosophers and wise people down through Human history have gave us that knowledge.
Had your social structure change with your knowledge then we would be living in a world where everyone treats everyone else as their equal their structure would be horizontal not vertical as there are no privileges or entitlements to destroy the Equality of all.
You may be wondering where this equality arose from
It arises because of evolution itself in that no individual of any species has exactly the same identical DNA structure of another of the same species.
This means that though the DNA may appear identical to another individual DNA the expression of those DNA will be slightly different even when they are twins or triplets in expressing that DNA gives rises in differences in the brain structure that give rise to their differing talents and abilities. It is also the receive of the impressions of the world around them and thus defining how they personally experience the world.
There for every individual of a species is a Unique individual of that species this also includes the species that goes by the inapt name of Homo sapiens.
So our Equality lies in the quality of our individual Uniqueness.
So far no-one has that I know of clued into that fact since Equality just means a quality that is the same. Uniqueness is a quality.
I'm having doubts ''advanced intelligence'' these days.
Today evolution of human intelligence has advanced us to the stage where most of us are too smart to invent new gods but are reluctant to give up the old ones.

Sure looks that way to me, Ms. Green
Arrogant slime!
When you go to war over religion, you're basically killing each other to see who has the better imaginary friend.
--Richard Jeni
I looked for a "war" quote this morning because of what has happened in Ukraine ... and because Putin has his own religion, much like Trump did: He worships HIMSELF and his desires. The sad reality is that, unlike Yahweh, Putin isn't imaginary.
