I have been a quote collector and quote monger for at least as long as I have been an atheist, and likely much longer. There is a fascination in me of those who are sufficiently skilled in language that they structure words into concepts and ideas and proposed actions which grab my attention and interest, whether it is John F. Kennedy's unabashed statement: "We choose to go to the moon and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard," Robert A. Heinlein's blunt expression: "If you've got the truth, you can demonstrate it. Talking doesn't prove it. SHOW people," or Captain Kirk's subtle yet important tactical observation, having encountered and been challenged by the dauntingly huge First Federation vessel: "Not chess, Mr. Spock ... Poker!"
Certainly, atheism has had its share of skilled spokespeople, whose words have inspired and driven us, whether it was Madalyn Murray O'Hair, saying: "An Atheist believes that a hospital should be built instead of a church," or Sam Harris, who noted that: "The only problem with Islamic fundamentalism are the fundamentals of Islam," or Aron Ra's far more succinct: "If you can't SHOW it, you don't KNOW it."
Consciously or unconsciously, I suspect all of us have learned and grown from such words and many others, becoming stronger and more mature, not just in our atheism but in ourselves, having heard such words as these, and that is the point of this group: not to just deal in quotes which praise and promote atheism but which advance the cause of knowledge, self-understanding and self-ownership. Each of us have likely heard someone say something and think, "Wow!" and resonated to the significance of what they heard.
That's what I want to do here: share, learn, and grow, not just from THEIR words, but our own.

One suggestion for the main comment area of the group: Please keep your quotes to under 20 lines or 200 words. That way, one entry won't dominate a given page of the comment area. If you have a longer quote or speech which you think is significant, create a separate post in the group.
Please enjoy!

Nice Comment
When I was young, the Second World War had ended. From the fifties I was optimistic during the next three decades for an eventual future atheist world. I loved the swinging sixties ... surely things would get even better and better. But Iran fell to the fundamentalists in 1989, and Islamist attacks were happening worldwide through the 90s. Then came nine-eleven followed by the causes that led to huge Muslim emigrations that continue now. Muslims who were unhappy in their own countries fled and are fleeing to the non-Muslim western countries that are economically doing well --- and assimilating the immigrants. The story got around that the happiest Muslims in the world were living in the tolerant non-Muslim west. "Go there and multiply" was the message. Col. Gadaffi had said that he could see signs in Europe that Allah would conquer quietly without fighting. I see signs that very strong atheist governments are needed to try and stop this happening. But where are they?
I've always believed in the development of humanity becoming more rational as time goes on, but many things have shaken that hope at the present time.
"Atheists or Muslims?" Damned good question. It seems to be a contest between rational people organizing and irrational believers reproducing, and to be honest, I don't like our odds.
Our community really misses the Hitch
"If we were to return in a thousand years, who will be running the world? Atheists or Muslims?"
Please god let it be Atheists haha
Say no more. A neat, great statement of the truths, but how is it that believers don't get to accept any of it? For most of them, brain-washed when young of course. Alas, when will religion be expunged from human brains?

Organised religion is violent, irrational, intolerant, allied to racism, tribalism, and bigotry, invested in ignorance and hostile to free inquiry, contemptuous of women and coercive toward children.
-- Christopher Hitchens
Christopher, I believe you got that in ONE!
Chris, the older I get, the greater my appreciation for life and the people around me becomes. Life is damned easy for the young to take for granted, which I suspect is why they can be so traumatized when it is taken from them at a young age. Lately, I've had my nose rubbed in loss here and there, and it makes me all the more aware of what I've got and its inevitable impermanence.
So Carpe diem, indeed.
Well said, Dylan and Loren! If you're not troubled by the idea that you're entitled to good things, you're often surprised and happy about the people you meet and the things that happen to you.
