Yeast and water as some may know was used as a liquid because water resulted in collera.

I've just joined the Pie, Mash & Liquor Appreciation Society on Facebook. Here's why I love this food, apart from the taste which is wonderful Pie, Mash & Liquor is a truly English working class meal and repast. Its so simple Mash potato, Steak pie and a Liquor. Its the liquor that's important, the ingredients of which are a highly guarded secret. Restaurant owners have to pay a tidy sum for the recipe. If they get it wrong they will soon go out of business.

I know that some of my AU friends like to bake their own bread so here is one recipe that was put in the oven in 79ce and was opened again nigh on 2000 years later.
