Thanks, Ian. Yes, gravity is pulling at us, until we lie down and are carted away. All the best for your brother! I heard that most people with prostate cancer die of something else, as it's a slow cancer.

For myself, I'm very grateful to have reached this stage of not working and not needing to bother with a lot of things anymore. We're looking forward to a quiet time together!

You look fine, Chris. I'm getting more aware of how the connective tissue doesn't have its bounce any more. If I flex my muscles (such as thay are) my skin doesn't follow along. Basically, I'm getting baggy. Such is life. The positive side is that, apart from my prostate, all internal organs are in fine form. My younger brother has had the news that he's got the early stages of prostate cancer. At the moment just two pinhead-sized dots so he's under 'active observation' with checkups every three months so the doctors can intervene if it gets worse.

Yes, if I want to fill the wrinkles I must put on those eleven kilos again...

I do not like any picture of myself outside of my wedding pics, & I'm not fond of the mirror either.

I can see weight loss there, Chris.

I can't understand how a picture feels so very different from a mirror image. I can use the mirror image without feeling bad but a picture of me almost scares me. But it won't have the same effect on you.

My childhood wasn't the story book childhood but I came out alright it did teach me though.
That a relative stable family is important so I I didn't go out with the lads to clubs and pubs. Was home all the time unless my duties required me to spend time away which was accepted as part and parcel for where I worked.

My boys turned out OK though I may not have been a storybook idea of a father, only human with all the foibles that brings, though I did try to instil in them "To think for themselves."

As for the comment close your mouth the flies will get in, we did not take that as hurtful more as a warning as Aussie flies love flying into ya gob. Many I time I have gagged on a fly  that decided I need more protein.
A reason that we use hats with corks bobbing of them is an attempt to stop the little bludgers from getting around your eyes in their search for moisture as they can cause them to become infected.

Mum and Dad never really called us by despicable names that I recall and had they done so it was more because of our behaviour at that point in time or we made a boo-boo when doing something. So we  just took it as being for that instance only and moved on.

I could have also had a thick skin and had other things better to think about than what I was called and rarely thinking about myself generally still am that way inclined except when the black dog decides to stick his snout in.

It's funny how we remember the hurtful things parents said to us as children. "Close your mouth--the flies will get in." "Stop slouching--you'll look like your grandmother." Etc. I tried hard not to say negative things to my children or students. Not to say I was a perfect parent or teacher!

Comment was by Chris B on July 3, 2021 at 7:48am

Yes, parenting is learnt from the parents, so I never had children. Instead I used energy for abandoned cats, abandoned houseplants and a few people who needed care. For me the ideal way to live, healing myself and helping where I could.

My father's childhood was hellish growing up in Scotland and I'm afraid he wasn't as good a parent as I'm sure he would have wanted to be. These things are cyclical and I'm not sure I would have made a good parent, I didn't have children so that question is moot.

Comment was by Ian Mason on July 3, 2021 at 4:39am

Yes, I remember the hurtful words as a child. My shirt never seemed to stay in my trousers and my Mother often remarked 'you look like a bag of shit tied up ugly.' My Father had no idea about children at all. The nasty thing is it gets passed on. I was never as kind and supportive for my daughter as I should have been, although that was partly my own fault for refusing to aknowledge my drink problem.
