I'm currently reading A Bookshop in Berlin
by Francois Frankel (published in 1945, lost, and rediscovered 60 years later and republished) about a Jew who fled Berlin when her bookstore was in the center of the "kristallnacht" horror. Frankel escaped to France where she was hunted down by the Nazis, moving from one hiding place to another. She writes about her experience in a riveting chronology of events (and survived).

Here's the scary part: I can see the same thing happening here in America. One thinks, "how can it possibly happen again?" Well, in a Trump world, anything is possible. The comparisons to Trump and his cronies to Hitler's regime are becoming more and more similar. Truly frightening.

"this divide can be traced back to divides that were found in Britain as different British sub-groups migrated to different colonies.

Ye! Gads! ancient unresolved conflicts in England fueling the fire of unresolved conflicts in the Colonies! Will their fight never end?

Why was the Colonial north in such strong support of anti-slavery and the Colonial south so pro-slavery? Did that dispute start the Great Britain?

One reason for that Idiot taking power here in the USA

https://qr.ae/pN2Aot

There has always been a cultural divide between the North and the South of the U.S. In fact, this divide can be traced back to divides that were found in Britain as different British sub-groups migrated to different colonies.

In New England you had a largely puritan or separatist population that disproportionately sampled from middle-class East Anglia.

In the middle colonies (Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware) you had largely Quaker populations from the North and Midlands of England as well as Palatinate Germans fleeing the religious wars of their region.

At the western boundaries of pretty much all of the middle and southern colonies, along the Appalachian mountains, you had lower class Scots-Irish migrants, many of whom were former indenture servants.

In the South you had a lot of Southern Anglican Cavaliers, Gentry, and their indentured servants. As time passed chattel slavery started to cement and replace the drudge system.

The book Albion's Seed goes into the details of how these “folkways" were rooted in Britain and how many were probably a thousand years old at the point in which they expanded into the different American colonies.

Compare the map above to a map of the sides of the English Civil War.
