How to Make a Mint Julep!

The mint julep is the official libation of the Kentucky Derby. It's a delightful drink that's perfectly balanced: it's sweet, tart, and potent all at the same time.

Although it involves crushed ice, it's an easy cocktail to make at home.

Mint Julep Recipe (makes 1 serving)

4 fresh mint sprigs

2 1/2 oz bourbon

1 tsp powdered sugar

2 tsp water

Muddle mint leaves, powdered sugar, and water in a collins glass. Fill the glass with shaved or crushed ice and add bourbon. Top with more ice and garnish with a mint sprig. Serve with a straw.

 

Mint Juleps for a Crowd

Ingredients

4 cups sugar
2 cups water
1 ounce (1 bunch) mint leaves, plus another additional bunch, for serving
Kentucky bourbon, such as Maker's Mark
Crushed ice

Directions

  1. Stir sugar and water in a heavy medium saucepan over medium heat until sugar dissolves. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat to simmer gently for 10 minutes. Place 1 ounce fresh mint leaves into large bowl; pour hot syrup over leaves. Let cool to room temperature, then cover and refrigerate overnight.
  2. Using a slotted spoon, remove mint leaves from syrup and discard mint. Pour mint syrup into large pitcher. Cover and refrigerate until ready to serve.
  3. Set out pitcher of mint syrup, bourbon, and crushed ice. Arrange additional mint sprigs in a bud vase with water to keep them fresh. Allow guests to assemble their own cocktails, adjusting measurements to suit their own preferences. In general, fill glasses with crushed ice and add approximately 1/4 cup bourbon and 2 tablespoons mint syrup, then add as many mint leaves as desired and stir to combine. Garnish with a sprig of mint and enjoy.

Serves 12.

 

 

 

Berry Tempting: Strawberry and Prosecco Muddle

This is a delicious cocktail with strawberries, homemade simple syrup, Prosecco, and lemon. If you don't have a muddler, you can easily use the handle of a wooden spoon. I made a big batch of simple syrup, so I can whip up cocktails quickly all month long. This refreshing mixed drink is perfect for sipping throughout the sizzling late Spring and early Summer.

 

Ingredients

1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup water
1 1/2 cups chopped hulled strawberries
6 thin lemon slices
Ice cubes
1 750-ml bottle chilled Prosecco

 

Directions

  1. Stir sugar and 1/2 cup water in heavy small saucepan over medium-low heat until sugar dissolves. Increase heat and bring to boil. Cool syrup.
  2. Divide strawberries among six 6- to 8-ounce glasses; add 1 tablespoon syrup to each and mash with muddler or handle of wooden spoon. Add lemon slice to each and mash to release flavor. Add several ice cubes to each glass, then fill with Prosecco.

Makes 6 drinks.

 

***Prosecco is an Italian white wine — generally a Dry or Extra Dry sparkling wine[1] — normally made from Glera ("Prosecco") grapes. DOC prosecco is produced in the regions of Friuli Venezia Giulia and Veneto in Italy, and traditionally mainly in the areas near Conegliano and Valdobbiadene, in the hills north of Treviso.

THIS ONE, would be good for THIS week, since i just learned from your other post that strawberries are in season right now.

I just love that idea Jean, I'm ready right this second!  I've got the strawberries but not much else....  Gotta stock up quick.  My freezer is so packed I don't have room for ice trays.  I must have ICE!!!!

PIck a day and time, Cocktail Queen!!  We'll all 'meet' in the Coffee Break room?  hee hee!!

Sangria

 

Ingredients:

 

2 bottles of cheap red wine, I use cabernet.

2 oranges, 2 apples, 2 lemons; all thinly sliced

3/4 cup brandy

3/4 cup orange juice

3/4 cup simple syrup, (to make simple syrup, use equal amounts of sugar and water. Put sugar in a bowl, add boiling water, stir until clear, then cool down. I stick the bowl in the freezer for a few moments. !/2 cup of each is just a little short, 3/4 cup of each too much, figure it out)

1/2 cup triple sec

 

Directions:

 

Combine all ingredients in a pitcher and refrigerate for 2 hours. (I start knocking it down pretty quickly, give it 30 minutes and you're good to go). =)

SYDNI!! I'VE SO MISSED YOUR FABULOUS COCKTAIL RECIPES!!

 

 

 I'M SO EXCITED YOU ARE BACK TO POSTING THESE RECIPES!!!

I'M KINDA FAMOUS on our local lake as "Jello Shot Queen"

 

I make 100s and 100s of jello shots, (each lil shot has it's own lid) and put them in ziplock bags, and wander around the part of the lake we call "The Shallows" and pass them around. 

 

 Sometimes there are 100s and 100s of ppl there, sometimes even a band on some pontoons or barges all tied together, and everyone dances in the water together.  Ppl dock their boats there, and grill, and wander around visiting eveyrone else. 

 

I usually name each flavor i make, and write the name on the bag,

and carry only one flavor at a time.  Pass them around as i say my hellos to pals, and then, get another flavor, pass those around, etc etc. 

 

 

Once, i was working recovery room, and a guy i did nto know, was waking up from anesthesia opened his eyes, looked at me, and mumbled "..jello shot queen..." and the doc thought the patient was confused and said, "who shot the queen?"

 but, i said, "nope, he's oriented.." ha ha!!

 

 

TO MAKE JELLO SHOTS------

Use small 4oz pkg of jello and follow directions, EXCEPT when you get to the part that says "Add one cup cold water" swap out one cup ANY clear liquor instead.

Keep the shots small, not big. Buy the smallest containers at your local restaurant supply shop.  MAKE CERTAIN THE LIDS YOU GET WILL FIT THE SIZE CUP YOU BOUGHT, too, real bummer to get home and have wrong size lids.

Stainless Steel Homebrew Pot with Ball Valve: 321BP 32 Quart<---red ones are notoriously difficult to make cuz they always taste like cough syrup, i rarely make red ones.   PUrple is also very hard to make, and not have it taste a glob of jelly in your mouth.

 

 

EACH 4 oz pkg of jello makes roughly 50 lil jello shots.

HERE ARE SOME FLAVORS I'VE MADE:

 

Mello Yello

Use pineapple flavor jello + coconut rum

 

Sex on the Lake

Use apricot flavor jello + peach flavor schnapps

 

Orange you Glad?

Use orange flavor jello + vodka, or rum.

 

MargaritaVille

Use lime flavor jellow + 2/3 c tequila, 1/3 cup triple sec

 

Cosmos

Cranberry jello + triple sec, plus splash of orange vodka

 

WhattaMelons

Use watermelon jello + vodka

(vodka makes the shots kinda have a bit of a bite, for mellower flavor, use rum)

 

 

If you absolutely have to make a red batch, your best bet is Mixed Fruit flavor jello + coconut rum.  For purples, (i sometimes make these for like, parties with a color theme) use grape jello + vodka, so the bite of the vodka helps remove the sensation you have jelly in your mouth, ha ha!!
