He was born on the first day of 1970 and grew up wanting to be a rocker, "the fifth member of Depeche Mode," so he said.  Went to the University of Nevada, a bit disappointed that there were no courses on how to become a rock star.  Joined the choir because the girls were cute.  Sat down the first day of rehearsal with the basses and Mozart's Requiem simply Went Upside His Head. Epiphany! Changed his major, dug into music, composing, wound up at Julliard, learning from and working with David Diamond and John Corigliano. He is now, very likely, The Most Accomplished AND Popular Choral Composer In The World.

His name? Eric Whitacre ... and here is that first piece he composed, back in 1991, for A Capella choral ensemble:

I've posted many Elgar pieces on Music Box over the years. I'm not what you call overly patriotic especially the flag-waving stuff. I hate having to stand for God save the fucking overly bloated Queen as my National Anthem. But I would stand like a ramrod if they changed the NA for Elgar's Cello Concerto played by Sheku Kannah-Mason.

"Nimrod" is probably the most famous of Edward Elgar's Enigma Variations.  I've heard it scored both for full orchestra and for organ but with THIS instrument and arrangement, it's become something very special.

Have a listen (Hint: really good headphones help!):
