Anyone for a little bass?

Thanks, Loren, for sharing the Dupré "Final" as well as, some time ago, a stunning transcription of Elgar's "Nimrod"! And I love how Andrew Carnegie opined that church organs "lessen the pain of the sermon."

That loud, bright, fierce sound that many people associate with organs -- often heard for "Here comes the bride", "There goes the bride", or "The mass is ended (thanks be to God!)" -- is just one corner of an expansive tonal gamut. Organs can whisper and sing as well as rage and exult. All those keyboards and stopknobs aren't there just to intimidate the uninitiated. :) In a sense the organ was the original synthesizer, using high tech of its time.

It's no accident that several composers wrote "Symphonies" for solo organ.

And a century ago Wurlitzer and others adapted them to the needs of movie palaces, with a single musician accompanying silent films on a "unit orchestra" complete with literal bells and whistles, and drums and cymbals and sound effects.

Here's a large theatre organ in a pizza parlor, in a "quarantine concert" that fittingly begins with "Consider Yourself at Home". The tune beginning at 1:11:40 is strictly for the birds, with an effect you're NOT likely to hear in church!

Having just answered GC's post about organs and organ music, I thought I'd post a favorite here.  I was first introduced to Marcel Dupré's Final from his Seven Pieces through the good offices of Michael Murray and his performance at the organ in Methuen, Massachusetts.  He really let that instrument speak its mind, and Brent Johnson does much the same here:

The song was written about Salford, Lancashire, England.

The photos that accompany this song reveal horrendous pollution, far beyond what any life should survive in. I wonder if anyone rose up and made claims to the right of clean air,,,and water,,,,and soil! Where is this dirty old town? Do the condition still exist.
