Our solar system has one habitable planet — Earth. A new study shows other stars could have as many as seven Earth-like planets in the absence of a gas giant like Jupiter.

This is the conclusion of a study led by UC Riverside astrobiologist Stephen Kane published this week in the Astronomical Journal.

The search for life in outer space is typically focused on what scientists call the “habitable zone,” which is the area around a star in which an orbiting planet could have liquid water oceans — a condition for life as we know it.

Kane had been studying a nearby solar system called Trappist-1, which has three Earth-like planets in its habitable zone.

I like this map as it shows where people do NOT live in the Middle East - the area with no religion

" Insects are basically land shrimp," Ah but would you eat one?

I love shrimp, and if the insects tasted as good I would try it. I could always close my eyes.

We now know insects evolved from within what was known as "Crustacea", now called Pancrustacea. Insects are basically land shrimp, if you will. Here's an isopod. It has more legs than true insects, and the body is structured quite differently.

See the Milky Way! Not in the urban west of this country!

Comment by Stephen on August 12, 2020 at 9:13am

Randall. I envy the fact you can see the Milky-way, even on a clear night in London the light pollution turns the sky opaque. Local government in London are beginning to use downward-pointing LCD streetlights which will hopefully cut back the light pollution.

I gave up long ago (well, several years ago, anyway), staying up past my bedtime to look for Perseid meteors. Some "expert" would forecast one "shooting star" per minute after midnight. In an hour's time, I might be lucky to see 2 or 3! And I live out in the dark countryside where the Milky Way is easily visible. At least that part is positive.

A thick haze and light pollution... nothing to see.
