Some of the images that emerge when you split slate and shale are spectacularly beautiful. I remember seeing a video of people working on a slate rock in the Victorian era throwing away slates with images because they were deemed useless for the building industry that is until palaeontologists paid them beer money to save them. Thank goodness they did.
