JOHN HARRISON   1693 - 1776

Harrison, a working-class joiner from Lincolnshire with little formal education,
invented the "grasshopper clock;"  and it took great effort and TIME to invent it. Poor Harrison, intent on winning a cash prize for solving the "Latitude Problem," spent years inventing and trying to get his money.

What are the characteristics of an inventor?

  • Able to tolerate failure

  • Achievement oriented

  • Competitive

  • Creative

  • Demanding

  • Goal-oriented

  • Highly energetic

  • Independent

  • Innovative

  • Inquisitive

  • Open to feedback

  • Persistent

  • A risk-taker

  • Self-confident

  • Self-motivated

And I add,

  • Seek out good teachers

John Harrison has always been a hero of mine, and due to the class nature of England at the time the eighteenth century Harrison was cheated by the aristocratic government of the time, mainly because Harrison was working class.
