We are a worldwide social network of freethinkers, atheists, agnostics and secular humanists.

Many if not all human societies have origin myths and they differ greatly.

Several years ago a San Francisco-born-and-raised woman told me she is a materialist.

An hour ago a woman who was raised a Jehovah Witness and has left that faith told me the Big Bang story grew from a human need for a beginning. I agreed.

Can you wholeheartedly accept that the universe had no beginning, that it has always existed?

doone, you realize, don't you, that your post is scifi, for which there is not a shred of evidence. Conjecture, yes, but no evidence.
For one instance of several, who has a timepiece able to measure those intervals of time?
Ethan Siegal doesn't.
What is it expanding into is Tom's point. Universe is everything, no?

Alexis, you are correct  that the universe is everything.

Parts of it are moving but there is no evidence that it is expanding.

Georges LeMaitre,

1) ignored Edwin Hubble's warning that red shift might not indicate distance,

2) assumed that the Doppler Shift for sound in air applied to light in space,

3) concluded that galaxies are moving.

4) Ran the equations in reverse, and

5) wrongly concluded that he had proved Genesis in the Jewish Bible.

Do you know these terms and what they represent?

Which terms?
LeMaitre. red shift. Doppler Shift. sound in air. light in space. running equations in reverse. Genesis.
I'm not conversant with many scientific terms and jargons. But as a metaphysician, I try to keep holistically updated. I'll learn them on the way.

Alexis, in a dictionary some years ago I saw cosmology defined as astronomy plus metaphysics. I haven't seen a similar definition in other dictionaries.

The OED says modern cosmology brings together observational astronomy and particle physics. In recent years particle physicists have seemed able to create particles needed by cosmologists who depend solely on gravity.

I'm too much a materialist to be a Platonist.
