Quote Of The Day

A place to post favorite quotes about atheism and other significant topics

I have been a quote collector and quote monger for at least as long as I have been an atheist, and likely much longer.  There is a fascination in me of those who are sufficiently skilled in language that they structure words into concepts and ideas and proposed actions which grab my attention and interest, whether it is John F. Kennedy's unabashed statement: "We choose to go to the moon and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard," Robert A. Heinlein's blunt expression: "If you've got the truth, you can demonstrate it.  Talking doesn't prove it. SHOW people," or Captain Kirk's subtle yet important tactical observation, having encountered and been challenged by the dauntingly huge First Federation vessel: "Not chess, Mr. Spock ... Poker!"

Certainly, atheism has had its share of skilled spokespeople, whose words have inspired and driven us, whether it was Madalyn Murray O'Hair, saying: "An Atheist believes that a hospital should be built instead of a church," or Sam Harris, who noted that: "The only problem with Islamic fundamentalism are the fundamentals of Islam," or Aron Ra's far more succinct: "If you can't SHOW it, you don't KNOW it."

Consciously or unconsciously, I suspect all of us have learned and grown from such words and many others, becoming stronger and more mature, not just in our atheism but in ourselves, having heard such words as these, and that is the point of this group: not to just deal in quotes which praise and promote atheism but which advance the cause of knowledge, self-understanding and self-ownership.  Each of us have likely heard someone say something and think, "Wow!" and resonated to the significance of what they heard.

That's what I want to do here: share, learn, and grow, not just from THEIR words, but our own.

==========================

One suggestion for the main comment area of the group: Please keep your quotes to under 20 lines or 200 words.  That way, one entry won't dominate a given page of the comment area.  If you have a longer quote or speech which you think is significant, create a separate post in the group.

Please enjoy!

As to the word "free" when referring to surgery, there are protocols that need to be followed. As to the surgical assistant or support staff, their personal life is another matter. Those people, surgeons, and support staff, with imagination, creativity, and initiative, have the freedom to develop new and different procedures.

Splendid! A new word:

Otiose: adjective, serving no practical purpose or result, lazy; indolent, of no use; pointless, redundant, ineffective; futile.

Synonym: vain: arrogant, cocky, big-headed, boastful, selfish, egoistic, high-and-mighty, conceited, inflated, elitist, inflated, ostentatious, overweening, pleased with oneself, proud, self-important, stuck-up, swaggering, swollen-headed.

Oh! My goodness! It sounds like these folks who think they know and don't know that they don't know, i.e., the otiose parent wants religion taught in the public school system.

Belief is otiose; reality is sufficiently awesome as it stands.
-- Martin Amis, The Second Plane: 14 Responses to September 11
Belief, indeed, has no useful purpose if it doesn't align with reality, and reality, as Amis says, is pretty amazing as it is.

Unless we all conform, unless we follow our leaders blindly, there is no possible way we can remain free.
-- Major Frank Burns, 4077th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital

Problem is, The concept of freedom which “Ferret Face” embraces and the one we subscribe to are very like two different things!

Same for me Loren, I was the inferior daughter in my parents' house. From the moment I started to live as anybody's equal I found friends everywhere - only thing is that "superior" people hate me.

Comment was by Loren Miller on August 6, 2022 at 8:16am

Some men might feel that way, Chris.  I don't.  Then, too, the way I was raised, I never had the chance to feel superior to begin with.  My father arrogated that position to himself, and he wasn't willing to yield so much as a whit to anyone, certainly not his eldest son.

The thing is, though, being equals opens up so many things, so many opportunities that those who insist on a superior position have no idea about.  Communication, exchange of ideas and emotions all become freer and more facile, I think.  It makes me wonder if those who insist on their pedestals are afraid of those things and want to control them to spare their sensibilities.

They don't know what they're missing.

But there must be something else, Loren; do you feel oppressed because your wife is your equal? Do we feel oppressed because coloured people are our equals?

Comment was by Loren Miller on August 6, 2022 at 6:52am

If you've been in a position of privilege, equality feels like oppression.
-- Alix Jules

And that's where American Christians have been for entirely too long and why they're so upset that their numbers are dropping, while secularism and atheism are on the rise here.

Yup.
