Quote Of The Day

A place to post favorite quotes about atheism and other significant topics

I have been a quote collector and quote monger for at least as long as I have been an atheist, and likely much longer.  There is a fascination in me of those who are sufficiently skilled in language that they structure words into concepts and ideas and proposed actions which grab my attention and interest, whether it is John F. Kennedy's unabashed statement: "We choose to go to the moon and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard," Robert A. Heinlein's blunt expression: "If you've got the truth, you can demonstrate it.  Talking doesn't prove it. SHOW people," or Captain Kirk's subtle yet important tactical observation, having encountered and been challenged by the dauntingly huge First Federation vessel: "Not chess, Mr. Spock ... Poker!"

Certainly, atheism has had its share of skilled spokespeople, whose words have inspired and driven us, whether it was Madalyn Murray O'Hair, saying: "An Atheist believes that a hospital should be built instead of a church," or Sam Harris, who noted that: "The only problem with Islamic fundamentalism are the fundamentals of Islam," or Aron Ra's far more succinct: "If you can't SHOW it, you don't KNOW it."

Consciously or unconsciously, I suspect all of us have learned and grown from such words and many others, becoming stronger and more mature, not just in our atheism but in ourselves, having heard such words as these, and that is the point of this group: not to just deal in quotes which praise and promote atheism but which advance the cause of knowledge, self-understanding and self-ownership.  Each of us have likely heard someone say something and think, "Wow!" and resonated to the significance of what they heard.

That's what I want to do here: share, learn, and grow, not just from THEIR words, but our own.

==========================

One suggestion for the main comment area of the group: Please keep your quotes to under 20 lines or 200 words.  That way, one entry won't dominate a given page of the comment area.  If you have a longer quote or speech which you think is significant, create a separate post in the group.

Please enjoy!

"For most people, religion is nothing more than a substitute for a malfunctioning brain." is an insulting oversimplification. Everyone depends upon authorities of all kinds, because the world has been too rich and complex for an individual to know everything he/she needs to know. As I see it, religions were a stepping stone in our collective intelligence which were the best we could do before the Enlightenment. That they're now obsolete and more harmful than helpful does not justify insulting the intelligence of current believers. We are brought up within a social fabric that dictates how we make sense of the world. Many layers of barriers prevent people from noticing or realizing that grounding ones grasp of reality on science is even possible, much less necessary for us to avoid self-extinction.

For most people, religion is nothing more than a substitute for a malfunctioning brain. If people need religion, ignore them and maybe they will ignore you, and you can go on with your life. It wasn't until I was beginning to do Star Trek that the subject of religion arose. What brought it up was that people were saying that I would have a chaplain on board the Enterprise. I replied, "No, we don't."
-- Gene Roddenberry

It would be nice to believe that, by the 23rd century, humankind had fully abandoned religion. Honestly, I'm not so certain ... but a guy can hope.

The way to see by Faith is to shut the Eye of Reason.
-- Benjamin Franklin

An immensely profound statement in but a few words, and it reinforces four other words which won the 2009 CFI Blasphemy Contest:

Faith is no reason.
-- Ken Peters

A belief is not true because it is useful.
-- Henri-Frédéric Amiel

Indeed, "useful" to WHAT purpose? To fool others into a similar belief, in order to separate marks from money, or useful to advance our understanding of reality and solve fundamental questions about it?

"Useful" is a loaded word. It never hurts to know what the USE is.

Yes, but they likely think their lives are treated as worthless as it is so may as well try to get something changed.

Stephen, I wonder how well Islam would do if the apostates were as militant as the believers are.  I also wonder if Arabic countries are slowly but surely headed in that direction!
