Quote Of The Day

A place to post favorite quotes about atheism and other significant topics

I have been a quote collector and quote monger for at least as long as I have been an atheist, and likely much longer.  There is a fascination in me of those who are sufficiently skilled in language that they structure words into concepts and ideas and proposed actions which grab my attention and interest, whether it is John F. Kennedy's unabashed statement: "We choose to go to the moon and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard," Robert A. Heinlein's blunt expression: "If you've got the truth, you can demonstrate it.  Talking doesn't prove it. SHOW people," or Captain Kirk's subtle yet important tactical observation, having encountered and been challenged by the dauntingly huge First Federation vessel: "Not chess, Mr. Spock ... Poker!"

Certainly, atheism has had its share of skilled spokespeople, whose words have inspired and driven us, whether it was Madalyn Murray O'Hair, saying: "An Atheist believes that a hospital should be built instead of a church," or Sam Harris, who noted that: "The only problem with Islamic fundamentalism are the fundamentals of Islam," or Aron Ra's far more succinct: "If you can't SHOW it, you don't KNOW it."

Consciously or unconsciously, I suspect all of us have learned and grown from such words and many others, becoming stronger and more mature, not just in our atheism but in ourselves, having heard such words as these, and that is the point of this group: not to just deal in quotes which praise and promote atheism but which advance the cause of knowledge, self-understanding and self-ownership.  Each of us have likely heard someone say something and think, "Wow!" and resonated to the significance of what they heard.

That's what I want to do here: share, learn, and grow, not just from THEIR words, but our own.

==========================

One suggestion for the main comment area of the group: Please keep your quotes to under 20 lines or 200 words.  That way, one entry won't dominate a given page of the comment area.  If you have a longer quote or speech which you think is significant, create a separate post in the group.

Please enjoy!

It's been suggested that if the super-naturalists really had the powers they claim, they'd win the lottery every week. I prefer to point out that they could also win a Nobel Prize for discovering fundamental physical forces hitherto unknown to science. Either way, why are they wasting their talents doing party turns on television?

By all means let's be open-minded, but not so open-minded that our brains drop out.

-- Richard Dawkins

Seconded wholeheartedly, Dr. Dawkins!

For me, it is far better to grasp the Universe as it really is than to persist in delusion, however satisfying and reassuring.

Why, I agree with Barker too

Comment was by Loren Miller on January 20, 2021 at 7:23am

I think that God that we have created and allowed to shape our culture through, essentially Christian theology is a pretty villainous creature. I think that one of the things that male patriarchal figure has done is, allowed under it's, his church, his wing, all kinds of corruptions and villainies to grow and fester. In the name of that God terrible wars have been waged, in the name of that God terrible sexism has been allowed to spread. There are children being born all across this world that don't have enough food to eat because that God, at least his church, tells the mothers and fathers that they must procreate at all costs, and to prevent procreation with a condom is in contravention with his laws. Now, I don't believe that God exists. I think that God is creation of men, by men, and for men. What has happened over the many centuries now, the better part of two thousand in fact, is that that God has been slowly and steadily accruing power. His church has been accruing power, and the men who run that church, and they are all men, are not about to give it up. If they give it up, they give up luxury, they give up comfort.
-- Clive Barker

A singular, observant, and powerful expression given here by Mr. Barker, and one with which I entirely agree.

Onyango a stone is a stone that's reason enough.

Joan, I think Engels was talking about people's ideas having to justify its existence through reason. I can't imagine he meant anything else, that would be unreasonable lol. I've tried to find the root of the quote but no joy.

Comment was by Joan Denoo on January 20, 2021 at 5:24am

Onyango Makagutu, I like the way you worded the meaning of existence. While trying to find Zola's quote source, I ran across:

“If you ask me what I came to do in this world, I, an artist, will answer you: I am here to live out loud.”
Émile Zola

I am unable to find the source of this quote, as well. It is 2:23 AM and I give up. Maybe I will be a better researcher tomorrow.

Joan I think I am with you on this. A stone exists without justifying its existence before reason. It just is. The universe is a brute fact. It exists.

Comment was by Joan Denoo on January 20, 2021 at 1:04am

Does "Everything must justify its existence before the judgment seat of Reason."
Does it? Does a woman or a man, a
genius or an ignoramus, a teacher or a student, you or I, Nelson Mandela or garbage collector have to justify its existence or give up its existence?
