This Ex-Republican Just Tweeted The Best Thread About What The GOP Is About. Ever. (Daily Kos)
I ran onto the following article not long after getting up this morning, and even to my sleep-besotted eyes, it was a revelation. Someone from the Daily Kos community picked up on a series of Tweets from one Ethan Grey, once a Republican and now a confirmed Democrat, who managed to sum up the current mindset of the Republican party in two simple and blunt statements, avec introduction:
Here is the Republican message on everything of importance:
- They can tell people what to do.
- You cannot tell them what to do.
Grey expands on this basic concept, citing numerous examples which clearly support his primary premise. Personally, I think it's as brilliant a summation of the Republican party's position on things in general as I have EVER seen, and I commend this article to your attention:

Strange. I'm open to criticisms of the Republican Party -- both in its present Trumpian incarnation, which I do not like, and in its past incarnation, as the 'Chamber-of-Commerce' party, which I did not like.
But I found that article in the Daily Kos very lame. At the same level as many rightwing talk shows where the argument is that Democrats are commies/globalists who want to control us.
Take just one point: Republicans make a big thing about our almost-open border. Why? So that they can tell people what to do???? What??? There's a real issue about the border. I can see why leftists would like to evade the problem, though.
We ought to have a real discussion about, say, the border, or free speech, or socialized medicine. Each side should address its opponents best arguments, not make childish insults about purported motivations.

So the Daily Kos piece is reductionist. Is anyone here surprised? The POINT of that article was to demonstrate one of the fundamental characteristics of the current-day Republican party, that 1) they want to tell everyone what to do and 2) that they don't want anyone telling THEM what to do. Is it simplistic? Certainly. Does it encompass the totality of the positions of the GOP? Not even close ... but It Makes An Important And Accurate Point: that the Republican party in the here and now seeks to be dictatorial and not answerable to criticism, as regards some very critical policies.
And I think that any Republican who genuinely thinks their party has something of value to bring to the table had better think long and hard about that ... and maybe, just maybe, do something to correct it. -
