Life-Changing Airplane Boarding Method of the Day

Life-Changing Airplane Boarding Method of the Day: Fermilab physicist Jason Steffen has created a super-efficient method of boarding planes.

In the “Steffen Method,” alternating rows board at the same time, window seats first. Alternating frees up enough room in the aisle for multiple passengers to store their luggage at the same time.

It turns out that the boarding order airlines use now, starting with the rearmost seats, is less efficient than random boarding. Ouch.

This is great. It show what you can do with computer models. You don't need an astrophysicist or a mathematician for this, but of course it's cool that an astrophysicist was the one to do it. It is also one of those cases that makes you think "why didn't anyone think of alternating rows, windows first BEFORE?", it seems pretty obvious.

I was fascinated by the fact that random boarding would be slightly faster than the current back to front row methods. Why would that be? That demands an explanation, my suspicions is that by rows tend to aggregate people who attempt to stuff their huge luggage in the overhead compartment, where it is pretty obvious it will not fit.

I hope that airlines start trying this, to get more data. 72 passengers are nit that many (as in the test that was run). I want to see this with a big plane.

That's a good idea. I doubt it will be implemented though. I want to know what was beeped out. Another way to speed things up would be to further restrict the size of carry on luggage. More bags should be checked. Maybe there should be a child/parent seating area. So the obnoxious kids kick each others seat-backs. The two 500 pounders should be seated next to each other instead of on each side of me. Cell phones should be banned as well as odorous food such fast food such as french fries and hamburgers. Boarding music isn't necessary. I don't want to hear Anne Murray while we are sitting on the runway waiting to take off or while I'm getting knocked in the head as people grab their oversize luggage from the overhead bin during disembarkation.

Popular Anne Murray airplane music.
