TALIBAN, AMISH ANNOUNCE MERGER

Well, not precisely. But it does seem that the wave of religious zealotry washing from Pakistan to Iran to the West Bank is lapping up against the Amish archipelago in Pennsylvania, Ohio and other American states. Five Amish men in Ohio were arrested this week for breaking into the homes of Amish families and forcibly cutting hair and beards of those they believed have become lax in the faith.

Values Voters

The Christian right had its big Values Voters Summit over the weekend, leading David Frum (who’s really trying to get kick out of the movement) to snark:

BTW: anybody else notice the implied message of scheduling a “values voters” summit on Yom Kippur?

Indeed.

Though something I endlessly find peculiar about American politics is the lack of distinctly Christian values in the most self-consciously Christian warrens of the political culture. Christianity has a lot in common with other religious and ethical systems. But there’s also all this fairly distinctive stuff in there about pacifism, turning the other cheek, etc. But “Christian” politics is, if anything, more violent and revenge-oriented than other strains of our political culture.

Half of Canadians think religion more harmful than good, poll finds

9/16/11

It's no secret fewer Canadians attend church today than 20 years ago, but what may be surprising is almost half of Canadians believe religion does more harm than good, according to the results of a survey conducted by Ipsos Reid.

Explanations from experts vary - from fear of extremists and anger toward individuals who abuse positions of power, to a national 'forgetting' of Canadian history.

"In the past few years, there have been several highprofile international situations involving perceived religious conflicts, as well as the anniversary of 9/11, and I think when people see those, it causes them to fear religion and to see it as a source of conflict," said Janet Epp Buckingham, associate professor at Trinity Western University.

Canadians who don't participate in religion themselves experience it in the news, which can sensationalize the negatives aspects of religion, said Dr. Pamela Dickey Young, the principal of the School of Religion at Queen's University.

The survey, which was conducted ahead of the launch of a new Global TV show - Context - about religion in Canada, also found that 89 per cent of Canadians are comfortable being around people of different faiths.

But, on the question of whether religion does more harm than good, Rev. Canon Dr. Bill Prentice, director of Community Ministry for the Anglican diocese of Ottawa, said: "We forget our history."

He pointed out that the first hospitals, schools, and universities in Canada were founded by religious institutions.

Interesting post from Epiphenom

Deep thinkers are more likely to lose their faith

There's always a fair amount of interest in whether atheists are more intelligent than believers. When I've reported on this in the past, I've always been a little sceptical about whether the purported statistical association is meaningful or even real.

Well, a new analysis by psychologists Gary Lewis, Stuart Ritchie, and Timothy Bates at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland has provided some more, rigorous evidence that the link is indeed real. They took data from the large MacArthur Foundation Survey of Midlife Development in the United States and found that high IQ was significantly associated with every one of six different measures of religion.

That one confused me as well. In local language use here that would be a child; can't figure out why a child would make him sick though. =(
