Nice Comment
A sad end of a good tradition.
It always has to be ruined eventually.
Speakers Corner in Hyde Park is a long time site for free speech they say it began to be used in the 1850s and has been going ever since. Politics, Religion, Social issues like Drug reform have always had their place. But I'm afraid not any longer. There had always been a tacit agreement that you listened to the speakers without rudeness and especially violence. Not anymore I'm afraid extremist religions of all stripes have begun to shout and abuse anyone who disagrees with them. Islamist groups have taken over the corner shouting down all opposition.
Instead of being a debating chamber as it has been for many years, it has become a place where violence and threats are issued every weekend.
World-wide instant zapping out of this pandemic, diseases, starvation, birth defects, cruelty, would be an impressive start......just sayin'......
In When Bad Things Happen to Good People, Harold Kushner described how his belief in an invisible friend shifted towards one who's "impotent" (in Sam Harris's words), who at best might inspire people to respond kindly and helpfully to tragedies and injustices. We can do that all on our own, though!
If you have to have an invisible friend, better to have one who's consciously fictional, who cheerfully acknowledges that she/he/it doesn't exist (outside people's heads), which would hopefully put a damper on people oppressing others in its name. One such character is the one true god Big Whoop of the one true religion of Whoopee ("a silly name, but religions are rather silly things, so it fits"), whose one tenet for us is, interestingly, identical to "atheism's one commandment" in the cartoon: "Don't be an asshole."
Big Whoop Book: Chapter Four [sic - hopefully that won't cause a religious war over whether it should have been "4" or was spelled out for some mysterious but significant reason!]
Those plans can be shoved up where the sun don't shine.
But he has a plan for us. Anyone who uses that excuse should be kicked up the arse. And then be told that's in his plan as well.
Exactly.....not to mention allowing birth defects too.
