Thanks for sharing some of your memories, Joan, albeit sometimes not so "fond" remembrances. You've live quite an amazing life.

You make an excellent point, Mrs. B.

No, glorifying war is not something I willingly want to see. The way humans treat fellow humans is bad enough without making entertainment out of it.

Chris B., I have 85 years of memories and the spirit of adventure. Couple these with a profound sense of the potential of Homo sapiens to care for the planet, I am an optimist/with caution.

Obviously, Religion, gods, dogmas, and litanies grow out of the imagination of human beings. The fact that these elements prefer males over females indicates to me that the authors were males. They used their stories to have dominion over women, all those not of their particular breed, and over all the flora and fauna  in existence.

How those silly men get away with such balderdash is beyond me. Talk about arrogance, audacity, hubris, and nerve of such ideas! Those who think god created male Homo sapiens as superior to all other life-forms deserve ridicule and correction.

Loren, I just now watch the MASH video you included and could not help but start crying. The year that Don was away saving lives in Viet Nam and I was at home tending to our herd of babies was a tough year for us all. Other families had it much worse, i.e. a very good friend of mine lost her surgeon husband to a bullet through the neck as he performed surgery on a wounded soldier in Viet Nam. She, too, had three small children.

Mra. B, Patricia, MASH was not funny to me, either, and it was enlightening as I could only imagine what were Don's experiences while serving in Viet Nam. I can't imagine he felt that much humor as depicted in MASH.

I have to make a correction about the straw bales used to protect the surgical unit, they were sand bags. As my memory was jiggled back to those events I remembered the sand, not straw.

Which is why I don't care for programs concerning war....it's not entertainment to me.

Joan. Wow what a story

Comment was by Joan Denoo on May 15, 2021 at 7:01pm

In 1966, I think it was, Don, my dentist husband, who was in Viet Nam in a battlefield hospital with  THE MOBILE ARMY SURGICAL HOSPITAL:  WAR – MUST where he received the head and neck wounds, sometimes minutes after the wounds occurred. He didn't write much about his experiences, except his hospital was a tent with bales of straw around the perimeter. The unit was called MUST, not MASH.

One occasion he did describe a soldier who came in on a stretcher, wounded in the head and unconscious, and they started the procedure to save his life. A nurse noticed the man had a hand grenade in his hands held in a steel-like grip with the pin pulled. The hospital staff piled straw bales between themselves and the soldier with the intention of limiting injuries if they were unable to retrieve the grenade safely. Happily, the grenade did not explode in the hospital and the man lived.

I lived in Spokane valley that year with a 2-year old and 1-year-old twins. For 6 months I had three babies under 3-years-old. I had lots of help from family and friends and the children learned how to behave when they were in restaurants, stores, and drug stores. They knew not to ask for ANYTHING while I shopped; they were able to choose one item each in recognition of their not whining or asking for candy and toys. I called them "My herd of babies."

The males in my family taught the boys how to stand at the toilet to urinate since their father was absent.  One day, Laura came to me crying because her urine did not go in the toilet while she stood as happened for the boys. Education in gender differences started early in our family.

I started watching MASH from the beginning to the end. Seeing the complexity of the battlefield hospital, I could then understand Don's silence about that year.
