Those businessmen were up themselves because religion abhors individual responsibility as it preaches obeying your masters as you obey your God. So if you decided to carry out your individual responsibility and go against your master he will do all in his power to ensure that you are unjustly punished for standing up for your individualism.
But like all god bothers want their cake and eat it too.

Far too many religious conservatives want to turn us into their flavor of theocracy. That's exactly what the provisions in our Constitution -- not just the First Amendment but also the "no religious test" clause in the main body -- are meant to protect against.
It turns out the myth of America as a "Christian nation" (founded on Christian principles of some sort or another, not just a nation with a majority who are Christians) was fabricated out of whole cloth less than a century ago, by big businessmen and their hired pastors opposing worker protections and other aspects of the New Deal. The idea was to stress "individual responsibility" and individual salvation as a counter to "pagan statism".

And speaking of the U.S. Constitution, Jim Huber points out that the Founding Fathers chose each word deliberately. There was no ACLU, no "activist judges"; if they had wanted a "Christian nation" they could easily have written something like:
God Almighty, in Order to form a true Christian Nation, establish Divine Justice, insure adherence to His Laws, provide for the defense of His Church, promote His Word, and secure His Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, has led us to ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.
Instead they wrote:
We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.
The Uneducated States of America amuse me. They have a specific amendment on religion in their constitution while at the same time religion takes a powerful position in daily life n their government
