Chris B, as always, you offer sound council. I will wait for a calm time and share my inability to hear and it makes my time in the group unpleasant. One day she may have the experience and understand. Discussing it with her will surely help.

Thanks Joan! What you can do for Laura - explain that trying to hear and understand everything in a group is exhausting. Give her your full attention when face to face so she feels happy with you. Announce that you take a few hours of silence every day to get rest. And make fun of the whole thing and of your misunderstandings. It works with Luca, she's as unhappy as I am with the problem but facing it together helps.

Chris B, I understand about "missing audible clues. Laura gets very irritated with me because I don't hear what she or others say and my responses sound inappropriate. She is gentle with me in everything else she has had to endure since I moved in with them, but my not hearing, especially in a group, annoys her. I know she will get used to it in time and perhaps understand, but now, it stresses her. I tend to stay in my room or in the garden in summer, and that helps her not being exposed to me. It may be that she can get to tolerating it, or when I am dead, maybe she will miss me. Who knows! 
Being "scared of losing my partner's soft voice" presents a loss to you that makes hearing aids and surgery a viable option. I certainly hope that you are able to retain your hearing sense..

Thanks Joan! Bad hearing ran in my family, so I got a share of it and it gets worse as I get older. After a failed first trial with hearing aids the doctor decided to widen my ear canals before a second trial. I don't know about the prognosis, I just try what's available, scared of losing my partner's soft voice. I rely on vision more and more, and I tend to hide in silence because I often miss audio clues. I don't listen to music that's new to me anymore, rather repeating the old favorites - Pink Floyd, Purcell, Schubert - but I don't know if I enjoy the sound or the memory, probably it's the mix.

Chris B, I am very sorry to learn of your hearing problems, although you have told us before, I just didn't realize how seriously you are affected.
Do you notice that you use other senses more, or are you  more sensitive to your other senses? Is lip-reading possible? What about the written word?
What sounds do you hear with music; or is orchestral tolerable, or instrumental? I assume vocal sounds like ducks, too, or maybe like dying ducks in a thunderstorm.   
What is the prognosis for hearing after your operation & using hearing aids?
Do you have any idea what causes your hearing loss?
Please keep us informed as you go about your experiences and feelings as you learn how to manage your life with hearing problems.
