My wife and I have been eating a whole foods plant based vegan diet for nearly 27 years now.  We abstain from all refined sugars, and oils. No alcohol.  It has worked for us.  We are both in our 60's now, and compared to our peers, our health is great.   Our BMI stays around 18.  Getting fat is never an issue.   The meals we prepare, and eat are full of variety, and are delicious.  We always feel satisfied.     Just remember the tobacco industry used the phrase "Moderation in all things".    A moderate amount of smoking can still cause lung cancer.    Same thing with animal based foods.

I just finished reading Joel Fuhrman's book, Eat For Life. Some of his statistics blew me away, i.e.: for the average American adult only 4% of calories consumed come from fruits and vegetables. Really?!! And that over 70% of us are overweight (which he claims should be far more as it's based on a BMI reading of 25 and up).

The "standard American diet" (SAD) consists of "meat and potatoes", and "junk" food (pizzas, burgers, coke, etc.). Of course, that's why we are overweight, unhealthy (sickly), and die prematurely. Dr. Fuhrman is out to change that.

Okay, I can buy into his program to a degree. I eat far more "foods that are good for me" than the average person. But to go to the extreme is a bit too much for me. He says: no meat, no dairy, no flour, no sugar, no salt, no wine. Ouch!! So, yes, I'm on his bandwagon to a certain degree--cutting back on bacon, for example. I guess moderation, for me, is the more enjoyable way to go. How about you?

Giant leap against diabetes

Ability to produce embryonic stem cells will allow researchers to push faster toward cure

Harvard stem cell researchers announced today that they have made a giant leap forward in the quest to find a truly effective treatment for type 1 diabetes, a disease that affects an estimated 3 million Americans at a cost of about $15 billion annually.

With human embryonic stem cells as a starting point, the scientists were for the first time able to produce, in the kind of massive quantities needed for cell transplantation and pharmaceutical purposes, human insulin-producing beta cells equivalent in most every way to normally functioning beta cells.

Doug Melton, who led the work, said he hopes to have human transplantation trials using the cells under way within a few years. Twenty-three years ago, when his infant son Sam was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, Melton dedicated his career to finding a cure for the disease.

“We are now just one preclinical step away from the finish line,” said Melton, whose daughter Emma also has type 1 diabetes.

A report on the new work is being published today by the journal Cell.
