Thanks, Don. We should pass the Dream Act regardless of the authenticity of the story. I wonder if they simply did not want to disclose the name of the participants but this info leaked in Mexico.

Adriana--as the comments after the piece below suggest, there's some  doubt about its accuracy.  The site now offers this a disclaimer: "Some have questioned the authenticity of El Universal's reporting. As of now, the outlet has not posted an update to its story. We have contacted Notimex/El Universal for comment."

Navy SEALs Squadron That Killed Bin Laden Included Rubén Mejía, The...

Last night, President Obama announced that the world’s most wanted terrorist had been captured and killed by U.S. special forces. A CIA-led Navy SEALs squadron of just a few dozen men were tapped to perform the mission. One of the soldiers selected to participate in the “counterterrorism group [that is] so specialized that no one can apply to join it” is Rubén Mejía, the son of Mexican immigrants.

Mexico’s El Universal newspaper reports that Mejía’s parents came to the U.S. from Guanajuato, a city in central Mexico. Rubén Mejía was born in the U.S. and enlisted at the Moreno Valley, California military base six years ago. After spending 7 months in Afghanistan, Mejía joined the SEALs and was able to see Osama Bin Laden’s corpse as it was carried out of the building where he was killed yesterday.

Mejía’s father, a machine operator, recalled the moment that soldiers in uniform came to his home in Los Angeles holding a folded flag. “It was one of the biggest scares,” explained Martín Mejía. “When they [the soldiers] saw us [the family] begin to cry they clarified that bringing the flag was an expression of recognition and honor because our son had carried out a great mission for our nation,” stated the SEAL’s father.

For a long time, Latinos were underrepresented in the armed forces. Yet, this started to change dramatically as the Army launched “a vast recruiting campaign targeting Latino youth, placing ads in Spanish-language media, including magazines, radio, and television.” In fact, several military experts have come out in support of the DREAM Act which would legalize undocumented youth who go to college or serve in the military precisely because it would significantly increase the pool of qualified recruits in the Latino population — which comprises the majority of undocumented immigrants and is more likely to enlist and serve in the military than any other group.

There is a flip side to this as well. Casualties among Latino soldiers in Iraq ranked the highest compared to other minority groups in 2007. In fact, Marine Lance Cpl. Jose Gutierrez — an orphan who made the 2,000-mile journey from Guatemala City to the U.S. at age 14 — was one of the first U.S. servicemen killed in combat in Iraq.

The American right-wing rushes to take credit for Bin Laden's capture by claiming that torture, implemented during the Bush era initially, resulted in the information that led to Bin Laden's killing.  Check my comment on this story (and the story) here.

Harper Gets His Majority

Stephen Harper came into the election campaign close to a majority and with tonight’s resultshe now has one:

Elsewhere in Canada, the separatist Bloc Québécois collapsed almost entirely sending a huge parcel of seats to the NDP.

Outside of Québéc the center-left Liberal Party lost ground to both the NDP and the Conservatives, and vote-splitting between Liberals and the NDP seeks to have given Harper the crucial seats he needed to get over the 50 yard line. Back in the 1990s, a divided right made the Liberals the dominant party in Canadian politics. For the past five years, it’s been just the reverse as divisions on the left keep throwing elections to Harper. It’ll be interesting to see if Canada manages to evolve toward a stable two-party system.

ha ha!  i thought it would have Trump in it, somehow trying to get credit, as Michel hilariously wondered..

I'm not joining in any celebrations in the streets, i didn't bake a cake, and i had to stop and think why i actually DO feel happy about this, cuz, unlike the article below that Adriana posted, i actually DO feel kinda smirky happy for some reason...

guess i'm not as evolved as that article's author.  (I do however, share the author's horror at those who celebrate some guy on death row getting offed.)

and in truth, the reason i feel happy about it

has not a lot to do with Bin Laden. nope. for me, that's not the best part...Yes, one less mass murderer on the earth, so that is good.

It has to do with watching the rightwingers get mixed up, on wanting to celebrate this---but--- feeling confused by it was President Obama calling those shots.  They do evvvvverything they can to deny, ignore, twist around, repaint any achievement Obama has done.

I mean, especially for them, that is their kind of red meat story.

THAT'S the fun part.  I don't often watch The Ed Show, i get too pissed off, ha ha, but,

it was fun to watch it tonight, as he reviewed all the smirky clips of ppl like Palin, McCain, Newt, etc, saying crap like, "We don't need a college professor there, we need a Commander In Chief", bah ha ha.

All the kicking around.

to ME, that is the fun part.  It's knowing it is yet, another undeniable feather in Obama's headdress.  YAY!!

back to the news....gonna watch every drop of it tonight, got it all taped...(rubs palms)

also, i hope this quickens the withdrawal of the our Afghanistan troops, as i been saying, the reason they are there now, is cuz of Pakistan, cuz of the terrorists within walking distance of nuclear power plants in Pakistan....(doone, you remember me saying that right?)

How America went from surpluses to deficits

If we hadn’t just found out that we located and killed Osama bin Laden, I would’ve spent much of the day blogging about this excellent Lori Montgomery piecepivoting off of this excellent Pew report that breaks down, in clearer language, graphs and numbers than I’ve seen anywhere else, how America went from surpluses in the ’90s to mountainous deficits in the Aughts.

As Lori writes, “The nation’s unnerving descent into debt began a decade ago with a choice, not a crisis.” A series of choices, actually. No policy contributed more to the deficit than the two rounds of tax cuts passed in 2001 and 2003. The wars were also major contributors. The Medicare Prescription Drug Benefit, though its costs will build over time, was not a particularly large part of the story over the last decade.

But then our unfortunate choices were compounded by an unexpected crisis. The financial crisis crushed our economic outlook. Revenues plummeted and spending grew. Then there was the stimulus package, which though smaller and much shorter-lived than either the tax cuts or the wars, was nevertheless significant. And as all this debt begins to mount, our interest payments begin to expand, until they’re actually significant as well. You can see a great chart breaking down the changes that drove the CBO’s outlook from surpluses by 2011 to deficits as far as the eye can see:

There are two major takeaways from this report. The first is that thecurrent deficit is primarily, though not exclusively, the result of policy decisions made during the Bush years. Insofar as Obama deserves blame for current deficits, it’s mainly because he hasn’t shut down Bush-era policies like the tax cuts. All the stimulus spending combined accounts for a relatively small portion of the deficit. Conversely, the financial crisis began before Obama was in office, but is unquestionably the single largest contributor to the deficit while he’s been in office.

The second is that economic projections are uncertain at best. Without the financial crisis, our current deficits, though significant, would be much more modest. Conversely, if economic growth takes off in the coming years, or if a series of disruptive innovations and policy reforms substantially slow the growth of health-care costs, our future deficits will be much smaller than we currently project. What we control are our choices. And with the exception of the health-care reform law, few of our post-Clinton choices have been good for the deficit.
