The USA had an off-year election yesterday and it looks bad for Scump.  Hard to believe but he is toxic and not liked anywhere.

Doone, we in the UK grow wheat but just not the type for the ubiquitous White bread everyone eats nowadays. Our climate just isn't right, so we buy our wheat from Canada and the US

The UK is not big on Wheat Growing = Way to go Canada!

From Kevin Drum

Last month, Gordon Sondland, Trump’s roving loyalist in Europe, testified that there was no quid pro quo in Ukraine. Sure, Trump was holding up military aide, and sure, Trump was balking at a meeting with Ukraine’s new president, and sure, Trump wanted Ukraine’s president to open an investigation into Joe Biden. But it was just a big coincidence.

A week later, Bill Taylor, a professional diplomat who is our actual acting ambassador to Ukraine, testified quite differently. He testified that there was indeed a quid pro quo; Sondland knew all about it; and Taylor himself thought it was nuts.

Faced with this, Sondland had a choice to make. Fess up or risk going to prison for perjury? Today he decided that discretion was the better part of valor and submitted a revised and extended version of his remarks to Congress:

The testimony offered several major new details beyond the account he gave the inquiry in a 10-hour interview last month. Mr. Sondland provided a more robust description of his own role in alerting the Ukrainians that they needed to go along with investigative requests being demanded by the president’s personal lawyer Rudolph W. Giuliani. By early September, Mr. Sondland said, he had become convinced that military aid and a White House meeting were conditioned on Ukraine committing to those investigations.

….In his updated testimony, Mr. Sondland recounted how he had discussed the linkage with Andriy Yermak, a top adviser to President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine, on the sidelines of a Sept. 1 meeting between Vice President Mike Pence and Mr. Zelensky in Warsaw. Mr. Zelensky had discussed the suspension of aid with Mr. Pence, Mr. Sondland said.

Unless my memory is playing tricks on me, this is the first time the Pence has been explicitly tied to the quid pro quo. Pence’s previous testimony have been the usual favorite of VPs throughout history: he was out of the loop and knew nothing. But if Sondland is to be believed, that’s not true.

So now it looks like pretty much everyone knew about Trump’s extortion of Ukraine. He wanted President Zelensky to get in front of a microphone and announce in no uncertain terms that a probe of the Bidens was being re-opened. Once that was done, the money spigot would flow and the doors of the White House would be thrown open.

And once again for the slow learners: Trump was doing this not in exchange for some kind of US benefit. He was doing it specifically for personal gain in an upcoming election.

But Republicans continue to pretend that this is no big deal because they’re afraid of what Trump’s base might do to them if admitted that this was, in fact, a serious abuse of power. And so nothing happens.

POSTSCRIPT: As I was telling someone last night, this is why I’m perfectly happy for the impeachment probe to go on forever. I don’t think it ruins the Democratic primaries at all, but every week brings new revelations and you never know when someone is accidentally going to let slip something that’s a brand new surprise. I would personally be delighted in the Senate were voting on impeachment next Halloween.

Interactive Map of the Universe.  It turns out Scumps Ego is actually small compared to the width of a Galaxy. The map is cool - try if you want.

Good Cartoon, Stephen.  Scump has ruined the USA's reputation and given pointers to Mafia bosses everywhere.

CALL IT WHAT IT IS: EXTORTION Federal law makes it a crime for an official to demand or threaten another party to obtain something of value — a definition that appears to cover President Donald Trump withholding hundreds of millions of dollars in military aid to Ukraine unless its leader agreed to launch investigations advantageous to Trump’s reelection. The relevant law is called the Hobbs Act and violating its definition of extortion is punishable by up to 20 years in prison. [HuffPost]

The Scump experience may linger in the memory of the world for quite some time I'm afraid.

More of Lat/Long

As with our previous look at the Counterintuitive Comparison Of Relative Population Latitudes Of US,..., there are quite a few interesting things to note.

Just a few observations:

  • London (51°30′N) is farther north than Calgary (51°03′N) with Amsterdam, Berlin and Dublin being located even further north.
  • Montreal is south of Paris.
  • Phoenix is placed close to the Ancient city of Carthage, which was a Phoenician city-state. People from Phoenix today are known as Phoenicians. (Credit: reddit users twomancanoe and svaachkuet)
  • Miami is at the same latitude as Saudi Arabia.
  • Honolulu at the same latitude as the Sahara desert.
  • Los Angeles, San Diego, Phoenix and Houston are all at the same latitude as North Africa.
  • Anchorage is further south than Reykjavik.
  • Winnipeg has been placed near Lviv, Ukraine and coincidentally has a large Ukraine population. Even the city’s flag has Ukraine colours. (credit: reddit user ajyablo)
  • Reykjavik’s average temperature in January is -0.6°C (31°F) and is warmer than Boston’s average January temperature of -1.7°C (29°F) despite Reykjavik being over 20 degrees further north (64°08′N vs 42°21′N).
  • Missoula is placed roughly where Geneva is.
  • The map also shows just how wide America and Canada are compared to Europe, stretching the equivalent distance from Spain to the Caspian Sea.

The reason many European cities have milder climates than equivalent cities in North America at the same latitude is of course the Gulf Stream.

More:

The US roughly fits into these countries:

  • Germany
  • France
  • United Kingdom
  • Italy
  • Netherlands
  • Belgium
  • Czech Republic
  • Austria
  • Switzerland

Canada roughly fits into:

  • Slovakia
  • Hungary
  • Romania
  • Moldova

Mexico roughly fits into:

  • Turkey
  • Greece
  • Bulgaria
  • Macedonia
  • Albania
  • Kosovo
  • Serbia
  • Montenegro
  • Bosnia and Herzegovina
  • Croatia
  • Slovenia

The Caribbean can fit into:

  • Poland
  • Lithuania
  • Latvia

Guatemala has a similar number of people as:

  • Georgia
  • Armenia
  • Azerbaijan

Belize, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama have about 12 million fewer people than the Ukraine with Crimea or 10 million fewer than the Ukraine without Crimea.

Finally keep in mind that North America is 24.7 million km2 vs Europe’s 10.2 million km2 and yet there are still nearly 200 million Europeans we haven’t counted in the map above. That’s why, depending on your perspective, Europe is either really crowded or North America is really empty.
