As DK is not locked down we went to see Moliere's 'The Miser' yesterday evening. A really good comedy and my ladyfriend's first theatre visit. She enjoyed it very much. There was a very limited audience because of the restrictions: stalls only one third full and the balconies closed off. Tickets were half price as sales were poor.

Joan thanks for the Nick from home live lecture. Like Mrs B I'll watch it later to give it justice

@Mrs.B, Zenter mentions Williams Lake at 29:00+.

His lecture begins with 15-20 minutes of welcoming people to the event, and he starts this lecture at about 16:00.  Zentner teaches from his back yard since COVID closed his campus at Central Washington U. in Ellensburg, WA. He currently participates with a group of geologists studying the N. Cascades, and I look forward to reading their research papers.

When my father was in college, he knew nothing of plate tectonics. When I was in college in 1956, minoring in geology, the term first came into being, and my father refused to believe it. Through the 1970s, plate tectonics became the explanation of continental drift.

Zentner offers an opportunity for those who do not understand the principles of geology because he has taught Geology 101 and other levels for 30 years. He can lecture in ways that make sense without all the jargon. This year he joins the research crowd and is loving it. Each lecture is new, rough, tentative, open to criticism, and praise.

Define: "A terrane in geology is a fragment of crustal material formed on, or broken off from, one tectonic plate and accreted or " sutured " to crust lying on another plate."

Sounds good, Ian, even health service catching up!

Comment was by Ian Mason on October 12, 2020 at 7:13am

There are definite hot-spots in Denmark. One in my home town could be traced back to a 60th birthday party: when booze goes in, commen sense goes out. Slaughter houses are also badly hit because there are a lot of 'guest workers' employed who work, live and socialise together in cramped conditions. Most of the cases in the second wave don't seem to be as severe as many of the patients are younger and stronger. The health service says it's making good progress in catching up with non-urgent treatment like new hips and knees which were held up by the first wave. If there's no new serious crisis, they should catch up by the end of the year.

Jesus.  using XLS!

Over the weekend, the U.K. saw its number of COVID-19 cases spike in large part because of a Microsoft Excel error.

Between Sept. 25 and Oct. 2, 15,841 cases went unreported in the government database. According to Public Health England, the files with positive results sent by the National Health Service’s test-and-trace system exceeded the maximum size. Because of the error, which was discovered Friday, nearly 48,000 people who had had contact with those who tested positive weren’t traced. All told, it could have put many lives at risk.

And you thought you had had frustrating experiences with Excel.

According to the BBC, the error was caused by the fact that Public Health England developers stored the test results in the file format known as .XLS. These .XLS files were then sent to the NHS after uploading to a central system. .XLS is an outdated file format, however, and each spreadsheet can have only 65,000 rows. By contrast, the .XLSX file format, which was first released in 2007, allows for more than 1 million rows. Because of the limited number of rows, each spreadsheet could contain about 1,400 cases, leaving excess cases off the file altogether. Although the issue was reportedly fixed by splitting the files into smaller batches, many are slamming Public Health England. “Why are critical databases in a national pandemic posted on Excel spreadsheets?” Jonathan Ashworth, the Labour Party’s shadow health secretary, said. “Why aren’t they using specialist data-based software?”
