I agree emphatically with all the comments. He's a man with a big heart and shows more 'love thy neighbour' spirit than most of those in churches. I agree also with the idea that people should be employed to do these necessary jobs. I can remember a time when they were. Who else remembers street sweepers with their brooms and carts? Now, if it can't be done with an expensive machine, it doesn't get done.

There are probably few who remember living during the depression and the failure of the government during the Hoover/Republican era and the changes that took place when the Roosevelt/Democrat era began the "make-work projects." Hoover focused on helping business; Roosevelt concentrated on programs of reform: Social Security, heavier taxes on the wealthy, new controls over banks and public utilities, and an enormous work relief program for the unemployed.

Perhaps we need to recognize the difference in focus and the consequences that come from those differences.

Maybe our government needs to put in place an enormous work relief program for the unemployed.  The projects could include repairing bridges, railroad tracks, highways, moving buildings away from ocean shores, creating living space for the homeless, training people for the Information Age, cleaning up rivers, streams, lakes, and drainage systems for water management, developing child care facilities for working parents, establishing access to basic health care, making it possible for people to get training for jobs, building low-income housing, etc.

Joan he's certainly a good citizen, I wish there was more like him.

Mrs.B  I agree with you it's often our neighbours and friends that fill the gap that the city leave.

Comment was by Joan Denoo on July 17, 2021 at 3:56am

Mrs. B and Stephen, the city should have crews out cleaning the drains and if they are not, the citizens need to join together in protest.

This young man has not earned a cent from the citizens of his community for his years of cleaning clogged drains. He does earn money from his very popular site. I watched perhaps a dozen of his efforts to clean out drains from flooded streets and he is quite personable. He doesn't complain; he does describe the irresponsible drivers who make his task harder than it already is. He clears drains in snow, rain, and in cold winds. I wonder if his community recognizes his generosity?

Comment was by Mrs.B on July 16, 2021 at 11:20pm

I always say we should pay our taxes to the neighbours. They do more than the city does.

Comment was by Stephen Brodie on July 16, 2021 at 11:19pm

What a good and decent person. Mrs B is right some of those drivers are so selfish and bad-mannered. I have to ask myself where's the city workforce. why do people bother paying taxes?

Comment was by Mrs.B on July 16, 2021 at 8:15pm

I don't think slowing down, or even basic manners, is in some drivers DNA.

Comment was by Joan Denoo on July 16, 2021 at 8:07pm

post 10 voluntarily clears drains. Most cars do not slow down resulting in drenching him with spray.

”The cops never give me any trouble in fact they told me they’ll give violations if I can get the plates of people who splash me but and these poor conditions the camera doesn’t pick them ups.”

Ian, if "there are probably several insurance companies in Canada that have their lawyers combing the law books for 'act of God' rulings just now," I hope there is an outcry that people can hear around the world. We need our courts to provide justice for those who fall victim to forces outside their control. "Acts of God" exist because of beliefs in some superhuman power, and that idea gets in the way of justice. We call that idea what it is: superstition, myths, and lies.

If ever the time is ripe for teaching the truth, it is now.
