Who can get through a day of the 2016 presidential campaign and not think of this? Here's part of how my mom did it in the late 1930s and the 1940s. I didn't know what she had in mind when she raised us as if there was no such thing as boys' work or…Continue

I was never into this.

It took me a bit to get through the first Dune book. The second and third ones weren't quite so bad, but the last three were absolutely horrid.

Dune is a Good movie but I never read the books

After it was clear that the outcome of the OSU – Indiana game was pretty well settled, I decided to dig into Denis Villeneuve's take on Dune. Being that I've read the first six of Frank Herbert's books, own and have seen both versions of David Lynch's movie, plus the Sci/Fi Channel's mini-series, you could say that I'm pretty familiar with the story, and you'd be right. The essentials are there: House Atreides, House Harkonnen, the Bene Gesserit, the Fremen, and of course, Arrakis / Dune and the spice. There's stuff added in and stuff taken out, and for once, we have a movie with ornithopters that actually flap their wings (they look like giant dragonflies)! This is Part One of what I presume will be a two-part movie series, and whether Villeneuve will tackle the sequels or not is unknown.

Is it better or worse than what has gone before? [shrug] As with many such things, it has its moments. The effects are very good, including a small element which will become the inspiration for Paul Atreides' new name. It's a good effort, but coming after two similar tries, please pardon me if I'm not blown away.

Found this picture of the early days of the Tube system at Charing Cross. I just thought you might like it.

Of course, that's the way that works.

Exactly. It's the only sensible way to go! When we got the vaccines as children in the schools, we all got consent forms to have our parents sign, & we all got our vaccines from the school nurses. No arguments, or complaints, we just did it, day by day, grade level by grade level until everyone was done.

I've just finished re-reading Stephen King's '11-23-63' and found out that polio jabs were compulsory for teachers in the late 50s-early 60s. No jab, no job. That's how polio was beaten.

Good one Ian, just right.
