The COVID restrictions in America have been varying a great deal by state and municipality. In many places indoor dining at reduced capacity is allowed (as if physical distancing does anything against long-persisting aerosols in poorly ventilated indoor spaces! And as if the people who have to work there magically get immunity!). Ditto for hairdressers and beauty salons. Despite having survived a mild case myself a few months ago, I don't feel safe going to a barbershop, especially with the more infectious variants of the virus circulating now.

In a few states, the Republican-majority legislatures have fought back against Democratic governors' emergency powers, in their desire to "look good" with an unwarranted "normal" (i.e. to sacrifice people on the altar of The Reopened Economy). As is unfortunately usual here now, matters of life and death, and of "promoting the general welfare" as our Constitution puts it, are fracking* partisan issues.

* Not a euphemism. Fracking is bad for people and the planet, and deserves to be a swearword. Joyful sex between or among consenting adults or peers, not so much. (Even less when there's love too!) And individual preferences and kinks notwithstanding, fucking doesn't go together with insult, anger, and domination for me. So I'm trying to modify my language. (Not 100% successfully. :)

To all my American comrades. What are the restrictions imposed in America, are they anything like the full lockdowns we have in the UK?= No Pubs(Bars) Non-essential shops, Cinemas, and sporting events, Hairdressers, Restaurants(takeaway only) and a whole raft of other things.

News bulletins have been showing life near to normal. Is that so?

Speaking of an "ordinary" life not being a failure, I'm actually glad I'm not among the ranks of the rich and famous. Rich I'll take, but it's a good thing that the media couldn't care less what I ate for breakfast or who I slept with last night.

(OK, I wouldn't mind being known and respected in some niche, as long as I got to stay comfortably anonymous to the public at large.)

Stephen Brodie, that "De Afsluitdijk:" video blows me away. Obviously, I am not an engineer because I can see all the reasons such an endeavor is impossible. Winter storm surges, shifting sands, rocks, and foundations would just wash away the most thoroughly researched project. Like the "Man-Made Islands In Dubai," I see them melting into the ocean within a generation.

I bet you are glad I am not an engineer!

O thanks, Stephen! The candles are hard to blow out, but I'll make a wish anyway. I never heard of the AU birthday app, but I enjoyed turning 67 very much.

You're also up early I see.

Ian, I see so many people labelled in a negative way by jealous other people! I still refuse all labels except my first name.

Comment was by Stephen Brodie on February 25, 2021 at 11:10pm

Happy birthday Chris. I tried to use the AU birthday app but it doesn't seem to be working.

Describes us pretty well, & we're just fine with it. ''Failure'' doesn't even enter the equation.
