Welcome to Animal | Vegetable | Mineral

I never cease to be awed by the splendor of the natural world, by the forces that shape the earth, and by the diversity and ingenuity of the life that populates it.

Animal | Vegetable | Mineral is a group where those who share this fascination can discuss the Earth and animal sciences of geology, volcanology, seismology, ecology, ethology, primatology, entymology—basically all the –ologies of the natural world.

For general science, chemistry, genetics, or evolution, please post in the Science! group. For posts on animal rights and welfare, please post in Animal Care. For cosmology, please post in The Daily Cosmos. For green living, sustainability, and environmental activism, please post in the Green Atheists group.

Endangered Sea Turtles Swallow a Ton of Plastic

Becky Striepe of our sister site Ecoscraps recently shared a pretty amazing photo of the plastic contents of a juvenile green sea turtle’s stomach (shown above). The sea turtle was apparently accidentally captured in Bahía Samborombón, Argentina.

Becky writes: “Green sea turtles are an endangered species and are having a particularly rough time of things lately, dealing with extreme temperatures and with plastic pollution. We talk about the problems with plastic, but a photo like this really drives home the dangers of our disposable, plastic-based consumerism.”

It sure does.

Adorable Birthday Boy of the Day

Adorable Birthday Boy of the Day: Einstein, the world’s smallest horse, will celebrate his first birthday in a few short weeks.

The 21-inch-tall stallion is seen here with his cousin Playboy inquiring as to the state of the weather up there.

193 Million Forest Acres at Risk -- Take Action

The Obama administration is developing new National Forest Management Act regulations governing the management of forests, watersheds and wildlife across the entire 193-million-acre National Forest System in the United States and Puerto Rico.

Unfortunately, the substance of the Obama administration's proposed rule fails to live up to its lofty rhetoric. Instead of ensuring strong, enforceable protections for our forests, watersheds and wildlife, the proposed rule gives bureaucrats the latitude to ignore science and to prioritize resource extraction over the conservation of species and ecosystems.

We need your help urging the Obama administration to correct course. Please send a letter and, if you can, attend a public meeting urging the administration and the Forest Service to enact strong, consistent protections for our nation's forests, watersheds and wildlife.

That's bad news, Michel, why would they block other countries from seeing the video? It's from the Smithsonian HD
