Welcome to Animal | Vegetable | Mineral

I never cease to be awed by the splendor of the natural world, by the forces that shape the earth, and by the diversity and ingenuity of the life that populates it.

Animal | Vegetable | Mineral is a group where those who share this fascination can discuss the Earth and animal sciences of geology, volcanology, seismology, ecology, ethology, primatology, entymology—basically all the –ologies of the natural world.

For general science, chemistry, genetics, or evolution, please post in the Science! group. For posts on animal rights and welfare, please post in Animal Care. For cosmology, please post in The Daily Cosmos. For green living, sustainability, and environmental activism, please post in the Green Atheists group.

Gnathosaurus "Jawed lizard"

Late Jurassic

Gnathosaurus

"28 centimeters (11 in) long, skull had up to 130 needle-like teeth arranged around the side of a spoon-shaped tip. The specimen had an estimated wingspan of about 1.7 meters (5.6 ft). It probably lead a lifestyle akin to that of modern spoonbills, wading with its jaws open and closing them upon touching small prey."

Maiacetus Inuus:

maia meaning mother,

cetus meaning whale, and

inuus for the Roman god of fecundity

A primitive whale that gave birth on dry land.

47.5 million-year-old fossils, discovered in Pakistan in 2000 and 2...

Evolution tells a more interesting story than creationism.

poor bird

And in this case, the keeper and the shoebill seem to be reacting to each other or what's more likely is the Bird is just acting out something she would do to another shoebill in the wild.

Anthropomorphism at its worst.

I won't watch. Animals need to be in their own habitat.
