Welcome to Animal | Vegetable | Mineral

I never cease to be awed by the splendor of the natural world, by the forces that shape the earth, and by the diversity and ingenuity of the life that populates it.

Animal | Vegetable | Mineral is a group where those who share this fascination can discuss the Earth and animal sciences of geology, volcanology, seismology, ecology, ethology, primatology, entymology—basically all the –ologies of the natural world.

For general science, chemistry, genetics, or evolution, please post in the Science! group. For posts on animal rights and welfare, please post in Animal Care. For cosmology, please post in The Daily Cosmos. For green living, sustainability, and environmental activism, please post in the Green Atheists group.

It's amazing how many ways we unwittingly damage wildlife.

Birds migration impacted by climate change.

The fucking meterologists have a myopic view of climate.  I suppose that's the way it's supposed to be - to keep the masses ignorant.

Even the cable news weather channel does a terrible job at explaining climate change.

Light pollution causes sea turtles recently hatched from reaching the ocean. Evolution dictates that newely hatch sea turtles go toward the light, where before light pollution used to be stars and the sun  moon reflecting off the ocean water.

Stephen asks

I wonder if the mass beaching of whales has anything to do with the increasing noise pollution.

The U.S. navy looked at that and changed it's active sonar testing areas in attempt to protect wales, dolphins, porpose and other sea mamals. The navy doesn't use active sonar unless it intends on killing an enimy submarine.

The U.S. navy creates less oceanic noise than other endevors. The goal of the navy is to keep a quiet sound signature.

The oil industry uses sonar sub surface ground penetrating sonar waves to search for oil pockets.

I don't think many know how much underwater sonar is used by the fossile fuel industry.  That's a huge problem for underwater human generated noise peakes.

General shipping noise is also a problem as is unhealthy water and fish habitat.  If  I were a whale whos main diet is krill but plastic is the only food source available I'd beach myself to committ suicide.

I'm sure it does.

Yeah, there is a big thing about shipping noise & our whale population off our coast.
