Let's voice our objection to systemic racism!
I Sent this email to my senators.
I urge you to cosponsor and support S. 4533, the Anti-Racism in Public Health Act of 2020, sponsored by Elizabeth Warren. We stand at a moral bifurcation. We'll either become a true democracy or descend into a loathsome Nazi dystopia. Do the right thing!
The website for my representative was down, so I left a phone message:
I urge you to cosponsor and support H.R. 8178, the Anti-Racism in Public Health Act of 2020, sponsored by Ayanna Pressley. We stand at a moral bifurcation. We'll either become a true democracy or descend into a loathsome Nazi dystopia. Do the right thing!
It's not much, but at least I have spoken. What can you do?
It turns out both the Senate and House instances of the bill are sparsely cosponsored (only 34 for H.R. 8178, only 4 for S. 4533), and, surprise, surprise! Not a single cosponsor is a Republican. Yet again one party clearly stands for wealthy white privilege above all.
Rep. Pressley rightly points out in her press release some of the consequences of "our nation’s failure to provide universal access to health care", and also names a long list of endorsing organizations:
Center for Policing Equity; Center for Popular Democracy; Center for Reproductive Rights; Center for the
Study of Racism, Social Justice & Health at UCLA; Hispanic Federation; The Justice Collaborative; Justice in
Aging; The Lawyer’s Committee; The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights; National Medical
Association; National Partnership for Women & Families; NAACP; National Urban League; Physicians for a
National Health Program (PNHP); PolicyLink; Poverty & Race Research Action Council (PRRAC); Public
Citizen; Social Security Works; UCLA’s COVID-19 Task Force on Racism and Equity; UnidosUS; Union for
Reform Judaism; We Must Count Coalition
I've called my congresscritters' offices, telling the Republican senator that the health of all Americans should not be a partisan issue.
I agree, and I have my representative and senators' phone #s ready with my script written.
