We are a worldwide social network of freethinkers, atheists, agnostics and secular humanists.

I'm new here so I don't know if this topic was posted.  Rally for Reason June 4 2016

The upcoming freethought / secular  / atheist / etc rally is being heavily promoted, although some of that may be hype.  I was enthusiastic at first, because I have the time to go this time.  I have never been to a rally like this.

On the other hand, I have a medical issue that requires daily medicaiton, which includes adverse effects of fatigue, achiness, and a little foggy mindedness.   This is why I retired, which is why I actually have a chance to go.  Besides that, I'm introverted, and don't like crowds, or airports, or the process of travelling although I do like visiting places if I could just teleport there as done on Star Trek.

I finally bought the airline tickets and made a room reservation, and researched how to ride the Metro.  I got the room based on proximity to the Metro so I could get from/to the airport without renting a car or using a taxi.  I also researched museums.  I think I will spend a day there, mainly the Smithsonian's American Indian Museum and the American History Museum.  I've never been there, the event will be at the Lincoln Memorial which is close to the Vietnam War Memorial.  I think I would be too emotional about the Vietnam War memorial so might avoid that one.  If I don't like the Rally, I have also gone to a couple of places that I always wanted to see.

Anyone else going to the Rally?  Planning to view the entire event, or see some of the US Capital?   Im not planning to attend the paid conferences, just the rally.  The June weather in Washington DC promises hot and humid, and it can be a rainy time, so bring light clothes, umbrella maybe, and if you go to museums, maybe a sweater or sweatshirt for the air conditioned atmosphere there.  Might be good to bring food, espcially if you have special considerations, like me being vegetarian.  There's always peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.

I'm glad you're going to the rally Daniel. its a shame you wont be attending any of the conference events they can be quite interesting. Will your partner be going with you, if they do at least you can look out for each other. And you can tell all of us who cant go to the event what it was like. Stephen.

You'l have to give us lots of details, Daniel! But......your health comes first.

Daniel would you do this live blogging on AU because for someone who lives  across the pond I would be interested in reading your thoughts about the Reason Rally. Stephen.

That's a good idea but if it comes to it and you aren't well enough on the day obviously we'd rather you did what you can manage and wouldn't want you to crash.

Sounds like a plan Daniel.

Sorry for not commenting sooner, but have had difficulties logging in here.

Daniel:

I went by myself to the first reason rally. I did the Smithsonian and used airbnb for the first two days. The day of the rally I stayed at the recommended hotel. Although a times it was a little awkward being alone in the party atmosphere at the hotel, I'm glad to have been there. It did not feel awkward being alone at the actual rally. The signs carried by the religious nuts on the fringes of the rally warning of my impending visit to hell were an eye opener.

It prompted my first atheist letter to the editor in Canada's national paper.

Nontheists Rally in Washington

''One nation under Canada''.......love it!!!!

I didn't make the first Reason Rally in 2012, but I am absolutely going to THIS one!  Last time around the attendance was estimated at something like 30,000.  This time I am honestly hoping for SIX FIGURES!  Yeah, it will be banana-land in spades, but it will be worth it ... and the major media had better show up this time!

I heard Richard Dawkins talk about the last reason rally in 2012 and he said he was amazed at not just the numbers that attended but the enthusiasm of the people. I hope the up and coming event will be even bigger. I just wish I could have attended but its to far and expensive. That's why it would be great to hear from those who do attend.

Sadly, Richard won't be at this one.  As I understand it, he's under medical orders not to travel and he had to cancel his appearance.  A damned shame.

Yes the way he tells it he really enjoyed the last one. We all hope he recovers soon.

Well you & Daniel could meet & give us a huge, youtube show! Hahaha.....
