The Islamic calendar and why it does not sync with the solar calendar

The Last Chapter in the Quran from a chronological point of view is a short three  verse chapter known as An-Nasr with an ordinal number of 110, but this chapter has no theological importance since it talks about just victory.

But the chapter before it is called At-Tawbah  ,which has the ordinal number of 9 even though it is the second last chapter in the Quran chronologically.

This Chapter has the most verses that order Muslims to kill.

But that is not our topic today, let us go to verse number 36:

  1. Verily, the number of months with Allah is twelve months (in a year), so was it ordained by Allah on the Day when He created the heavens and the earth; of them four are Sacred, (i.e. the 1st, the 7th, the 11th and the 12th months of the Islamic calendar). That is the right religion, so wrong not yourselves therein, and fight against the Mushrikun (polytheists, pagans, idolaters, disbelievers in the Oneness of Allah) collectively, as they fight against you collectively. But know that Allah is with those who are Al-Muttaqun (the pious - see V.2:2).”

37.” The Nasiia (the leap month) is indeed an addition to disbelief: thereby the disbelievers are led astray, for they make it lawful one year and forbid it another year in order to adjust the number of months forbidden by Allah, and make such forbidden ones lawful. The evil of their deeds seems pleasing to them. And Allah guides not the people, who disbelieve.”

  1. O you who believe! What is the matter with you, that when you are asked to march forth in the Cause of Allah (i.e. Jihad) you cling heavily to the earth? Are you pleased with the life of this world rather than the Hereafter? But little is the enjoyment of the life of this world as compared with the Hereafter.”

  1. If you march not forth, He will punish you with a painful torment and will replace you by another people, and you cannot harm Him at all, and Allah is Able to do all things.”

The Nasiia is a leap month that is added every three years so the lunar and solar colander can sync and this is what the Jews do. The Jewish calendar is based on three astronomical phenomena: the rotation of the Earth about its axis (a day); the revolution of the moon about the Earth (a month); and the revolution of the Earth about the sun (a year). These three phenomena are independent of each other, so there is no direct correlation between them. On average, the moon revolves around the Earth in about 29½ days. The Earth revolves around the sun in about 365¼ days, that is, about 12.4 lunar months.

The Jewish calendar, however, coordinates all three of these astronomical phenomena. Months are either 29 or 30 days, corresponding to the 29½-day lunar cycle. Years are either 12 or 13 months, corresponding to the 12.4 month solar cycle.

The problem with strictly lunar calendars is that there are approximately 12.4 lunar months in every solar year, so a 12-month lunar calendar is about 11 days shorter than a solar year and a 13-month lunar is about 19 longer than a solar year.

To compensate for this drift, the Jewish calendar uses a 12-month lunar calendar with an extra month occasionally added. [1]

Too complicated? Not really but it was for Muhammad who had no idea why this month was added so he basically forbids it and made it Kufer. So what evidence do we have to support this theory?

You can go and dig some old book on this rare topic which are really scares or you can use language analysis:

In English:

month (n.) :Old English monað, from Proto-Germanic *menoth- (source also of Old Saxon manoth, Old Frisian monath, Middle Dutch manet, Dutch maand, Old High German manod, German Monat, Old Norse manaðr, Gothic menoþs "month"), related to *menon- "moon" (see moon (n.); the month was calculated from lunar phases). Its cognates mean only "month" in the Romance languages, but in Germanic generally continue to do double duty. Phrase a month of Sundays "a very long time" is from 1832 (roughly 7 and a half months, but never used literally).[2]

So this proof that months are named after the lunar phase but what about the name of months in Arabic?

No.

Name

Arabic

Meaning

1

Muḥarram

مُحَرَّم

forbidden

2

Ṣafar

صَفَر

void

3

Rabī‘ al-awwal

رَبيع الأوّل

the first spring

4

Rabī‘ ath-thānī

رَبيع الثاني

the second spring

5

Jumādá al-ūlá

جُمادى الأولى

the first of parched land

6

Jumādá al-ākhirah

جُمادى الآخرة

the last of parched land

7

Rajab

رَجَب

respect, honour

8

Sha‘bān

شَعْبان

scattered

9

Ramaḍān

رَمَضان

burning heat

10

Shawwāl

شَوّال

raised

11

Dhū al-Qa‘dah

ذو القعدة

the one of truce/sitting

12

Dhū al-Ḥijjah

ذو الحجة

the one of pilgrimage

[3]

And look at these months names:

3: the first spring

4: the second spring

5: the first of parched land

6: the last of parched land

9: burning heat

These are not lunar months but solar months because they reflect a strong correlation with seasons (spring, freezing and extreme heat (summer)).

So what happened?

Muhammad at the last year before his death decided to ban this leap month. The removal of the leap month was not noticeable the year after his death either because the difference was only 11 days but after year after year, the difference became obvious. For example a month Like “Ramadan” which means the extreme heat might come in summer in a year and a few years later it will come in the middle of winter.

Something Muhammad never anticipates, and he died shortly after he wrote that chapter, and never saw the fruit of his decision if he did he would have undone it.
