We are a worldwide social network of freethinkers, atheists, agnostics and secular humanists.

Has anyone here been sworn into court lately?  Did they offer you a bible to swear upon, and say, "so help you god" etc etc?

I often wonder what i would do in that case.  HOnestly, it's been years since i was in a courtroom, and at the time, i was so overwhelmed with the whole situation, that i did not even notice the bible/so help you god part at all.

I'd sorta hate to prejudice the judge or jury against me right off the bat,

but,

i just couldn't pretend the bible meant a thing,

nor would i appreciate having to appear to agree to hoping god would help me tell the truth.

(or perhaps, the "so help you god" part hints that god will 'get me' if i lie, not sure what it even MEANS...??)

I suppose i could call ahead, and ask court clerk if they could skip that part for me, but, what if the clerk says nope, no way.

HOW WOULD YOU HANDLE THIS?

I've never thought about this; how religion is in every aspect of society even in the legal system... It's unbelievable !

I thought so. Please post.

It has never happened to me. Is this normal procedure??

I wonder what would happen if you said you were an atheist, that swearing was against your non-religion?

I have been wondering about this for a while. I live in NC so now I know what to do and what my options are.

Great link, Curly, Girl,

THANKS!

i read the entire article, as well as clicked on some of links embedded into the article.  It says "usually" an athiest, (or anyone) has the option to affirm, so i hope most states or counties DO allow affirming and fall under the "usually" umbrella...lol.

and the article does mention, this affirming vs swearing,

 *may*

direct att'n to the fact you are not swearing on the bible like everyone else is, which, he points out, is usually seen as a 'negative' against the person who skips the bible part.

religion bites.  SO GLAD to see so many others feel same as i do about this "swearing in" nonsense.

this shows how religion is complicated and also this shows that religion does not fit within these days, Where there are many atheists around.

In an Indian court they make u swear upon the Bhagavad Gita,  which apparently is the Hindu Judiciary system, the Muslims have different laws, I don't know about them.

Well,

I am glad Curly Girl proved that not all the judicial system is permeated by GOD !!!
