We are a worldwide social network of freethinkers, atheists, agnostics and secular humanists.

Friends, this is the beginning of a sketch on morality that I have been developing and I would so much welcome comments and questions in developing it further. I am trying to describe my moral position from a philosophical point of view.

My thesis is that morality does not exist. What we call moral values are illusions.

Yes, that is correct. Moral values exist for the purpose of maintaining social cohesion. That is why moral values change pretty often, as culture changes. Having said that, I think we come equipped with some basic moral "programs" that are part of our evolutionary make-up, such as the tendency to avoid harming others of our own group (the "group" can of course, change in definitions), the tendency to be loyal to our own group, the disgust or disinclination towards incest, the need to protect the weak, and to punish cheaters and those who break the rules of the group.

I'm thinking that higher animals all show moral behavior. They certainly don't codify it after the fact - like we are so good at - but their groups (family, pod, etc.) wouldn't survive as groups without some implicit group rules.
