welcome to our site, joel

Well, hello everybody!  Not a lot to reveal about myself, other than being your average (heathen) prole, of average education, reasonable intelligence and a new found thirst for knowledge (why is this happening as I get old??!).  Born atheist (as we all are), never indoctrinated.  Thank my parents for explaining that I'm just another animal, despite what my schools were trying to teach me.  I was sent to catholic schools (for some bizarre reason, probably extended religious family pressure) which only served to reinforce my lack of belief in deities.  Working in the very dull, but still important I.T. sector, installing systems into banks/schools/uni's/supermarkets/police stations/hospitals, you name it, I've probably set up some kind of computer there.  May make efforts to return to some kind of education, but where to start?  Biggest fascinations are with science, particularly physics (cosmology/astronomy/astrophysics) and the vast openness of space. Still don't really understand it, but nonetheless, it's far more fascinating than (myth)theology!

Welcome Jamie - great intro.  There is nothing better than wanting to keep learning - the opposite of dogma.  BTW, I'm in the IT field and still consider it fascinating... it doesn't take much to entertain me :-)

Haha, don't get me wrong, I.T. is amazing, particularly the evolution we're experiencing in human communication, but I guess I'm playing up to my 'boring' geeky I.T guy image.  However, geeks are definitely the most interesting people I know!

Welcome, Jamie! I was sent to Catholic school too (long story) even though my family was only superficially religious, and I really got a very good education there. They taught us to think critically, believe it or not, which of course is the best antidote against religion, haha! I'm in touch with many old classmates from that school and the vast majority of them are atheists :-)

That's good to hear!  Looking back, it's funny to say, I loved my Catholic schools, religion was never rammed down our throats, but I felt like a 'wicked child' during Mass as I've never been baptised, never Catholic, and so wasn't entitled to the body of Christ!  Towards the end of school, due to my atheism, I managed to get out of any religious study classes after some mild protests with the teachers and so here you have an atheist who successfully conned the Catholic church out of an education!
