Hey, Jim.

Right off the top, there are the "classics:"

  • Richard Dawkins, The God Delusion
  • Christopher Hitchens, god is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything
  • Sam Harris, Letter to a Christian Nation and The End of Faith

There are also several other really good books about confronting irrational belief:

  • Jerry A. Coyne, Faith vs. Fact: Why Science and Religion Are Incompatible
  • David Fitzgerald, Nailed: Ten Christian Myths That Show Jesus Never Existed at All
  • Robert Green Ingersoll, Some Mistakes of Moses
  • Dan Barker, Godless
  • Aron Ra, Foundational Falsehoods of Creationism
  • Seth Andrews, Deconverted and Christianity Made Me Talk Like an Idiot!

These will get you started. I would also recommend watching The Atheist Experience, especially episodes with Matt Dillahunty and/or Tracie Harris, though all the folks who host that show know their stuff, up, down, and sideways, and they express themselves very well. You can find the show online or on YouTube.

If there is anything else you'd like help with, don't hesitate to give a shout.

Loren,

Wow! What a trove - I have a few  of those on my "Have Read" list, but now with your suggestions my "To Read" list will keep me occupied for a good while.

I think I'll start with "Christianity Made Me Talk Like an Idiot!"

Thanks for the list.

If you haven't already run into Seth Andrews, trust me, you'll like him.  He's a good guy, smart, but not full of himself, and with the gift of a storyteller.  I met him once at an event here in NE Ohio, and I am here to tell you, Seth is for real.

Do please enjoy!

You'll also find a great deal of his work on YouTube under The Thinking Atheist.  Thing is, Seth doesn't at all call HIMSELF that.  It's more an idea he had: wanting people to, as he says, "Assume nothing, question everything, and start THINKING."

Thanks for the YouTube link. I just subscribed to his channel.

I think I'm going to borrow the motto "Assume nothing, question everything, and start THINKING."

Somehow, I don't think Seth will mind!

While I'm at it, back in the day, Seth used to make a BUNCH of hilarious religious send-up videos.  The following is among the first he produced:

I'm rotfl. Its a gem.

Hey Loren,

These are good references.

I have a number to add

  1. The testament of Jean Messlier
  2. Letters to Eugenia by D'Holdbach
  3. Decolonizing African Religions by Okot P'Bitek
  4. The ruins of empire by Volney
  5. H L Mencken on Religion
  6. In defence of atheism by Percey Shelley and lastly
  7. Supernatural religion by Walter Richard Cassells
