We are a worldwide social network of freethinkers, atheists, agnostics and secular humanists.

This is something that has been on my mind for a while now. Which celebs are really atheist? My facebook page has been lit up with quotes from celebrities that would question if it was true or not. I've also been to a site that gives so called quotes from past fore fathers who were supposedly Atheist? One was from Ben Franklin that states "To see by faith you have to close the eye of reason." or something like that. It also gives quotes from George Washington who was a Freemason, and if my memory serves me correctly religion plays a big role in Freemasonry. It just seems like people are starting to make shit up of who is Atheist but really isn't. It's like people want them to be Atheist just so that they have celebrity backing on the subject.

The list is long but for the sake of it the two that stand out in my mind right now are Bill Gates and Jim Henson. Others are Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Woody Allen, Kathy Griffin, and Seth Green. When and what did these people say to call themselves out on being Atheist?

Now, you have celebrities like Bill Maher that tweet things all the time and so I have no question about them being one. It's the others that I scratch my head when I see stuff posted about them. Can anyone give me a clue as to who is really an Atheist?

Well, atheists are subject to the confirmation bias, like everyone else. Moreover, some are certainly not beyond thinking their purpose in more important than being thorough or honest.

Also, the really bright ideas, I don't actually care who wrote them, if they work for me. The more so-so formulations do gain weight when allegedly endorsed by celebrities  You'd say Duh! if I uttered them, but if attributed to Einstein, the quotes warrant the benefit of the doubt, the doubt that they might have a deeper meaning.

But in the end, ideas stick to me because they fit me, not because of who thought them. That's why I don't really mind that flow of "Alleged Celebrity Atheist Quotes," I'm sure I'll find some good ones in the lot.

I don't think too much about celebrities being atheists or not.  I believe it's the person himself that knows it.  Quotes can appear from anywhere but if they resonate to an atheist mind, great !

I hope they have quotes by me :-D, I think what matters for me is not who said what but what was said.
