We are a worldwide social network of freethinkers, atheists, agnostics and secular humanists.

There may be no one whose words in favor of freedom of thought and in opposition to the mind-binding effect of religious belief were quite so powerful as those of Christopher Hitchens.  His repeated dismissals of the false authority of religion were as thorough as they were thoughtful and thought out, even as cancer had him in its sights.

With all of that, there may be no single statement Hitchens ever made that was as powerful or all-encompassing as this vignette from his debate with William Dembski.  In it he rejects the "poisoned chalice" of irrational belief while emphatically affirming the drive to LEARN and to grow from that learning.  I have probably listened to this speech a few dozen times at least, yet I thrill to Christopher's words every time I hear them.

And I am pleased to share them with you here.  Please enjoy.  And Christopher?  Thank you ... a LOT.

  • I join you, Loren, in your sincere sentiments. Christopher was the champion atheist voice in such matters---which to me is made sadder because his religious brother (often on TV) continues to thrive. The brother is intelligent up to a point, and yet cannot recognise and cast out the brain-washing that he received [i.e. suffered] as a child.
  • By the way, yours is the first post to come to me from Atheist Universe for over a couple of months. I don't know why I am not automatically receiving posts written by friends.

Totally agreed, Terry.  Peter Hitchens has never made any sense to me, and his attempts to argue with his brother were remarkable in their abject failure, both to advance any meaningful conversation and to negate points made by Christopher.  I personally have no reason to pay Peter any substantial attention anymore.

As for your email notifications, I've seen some issues with that as well.  You might bring it up to one of the moderators, see if you can get some help.

Wish we were able to clone him a few thousand times.
