Are we aiming for one group for each US city?
The groups section of this site is already overwhelmed by geographically-specific groups - 134 groups for 82 members. Nearly all of the groups have exactly one member.
Is this sensible?

I think the local groups are meant to encourage people from different areas by showing them there are others like them there. Those are not my groups, so it's just a guess.

Hmmm... So imagine a new member from Las Cruces NM. She joins AU, sees the group for her city and feels encouraged... until she discovers that the only other member is based in Michigan 1700 miles away.

Well, I don't know what to say, because whatever I say it's just a guess. Anyway, as you pointed out, there are only 82 registered members so far; the number of total members will grow and so will the number of members of certain local groups. Some people are not so eager to share their views on religion, and some are not so eager to open groups, so it's easier for them to join an already opened group. The fact is that this network needs content to welcome the new members in a more proper way. Not everyone likes to join a new site and help it grow - there are already other atheist networks that have more years online to back them up, so I don't see how those groups can hurt the site. In my opinion it actually helps it, even if just a little. I hope you understand that it's just an opinion. Perhaps Neal, the one that opened most of those groups, can let you know what he has to say about this.

I started those groups for two reasons. One, it is a searchable feature. If someone looks for an atheist group in whatever state, (or city), they will get a response that will hopefully lead them to this site. So even if there are not locals to talk atheism with, they will find an online social group. So, in one respect, it is advertising.
Second reason. I'm going to send out invitations to the local atheists groups in each state or city that I can find, and tell them if they want to publish their upcoming meetings, or activities, they are welcome to do so here for free. On other network sites we would have people join looking for atheists in their area, hopefully this will help them connect as well. I helped start the local mid-michigan group in my area, and am hoping they will use the Lansing, MI group to advertise their meetings. Right now they pay meetup to host them, and I keep a minimalist website up for them.
More advertising for us, more advertisement for local groups, I do not see it as a bad thing. For most states, the two largest cities have groups, and the state. They have one member because they were just started, i didn't expect them to fill up in one day.

the searchable thing IS working, Neal, i started up Indiana group, and posted some thread with tips on how to find local atheists in Indiana (ha ha, finding morel mushrooms can be easier, ha ha)
I started thread on Indiana group for other locals to list their local atheists groups i think is good idea for various state threads to consider doing. I've crossed paths with atheists who had no idea there WERE local groups right in their town.
but yeah, Neil, i don't much understand having groups for one specific town, either, but, who knows...so i agree with both Neils/Neals. =))
Anyway------the searchable thing works---------------to find more info for Hoosier athiests----------- i then typed in "Indiana atheists" and MY NEW GROUP popped up in first 2 or 3 results! ha. I see the rationale there.
And Julien is right, this website is only a few days old, it WILL grow, and probably fast. We should try our best to enjoy it while it is still small and cozy................cuz i feel those days are numbered.....

Even when it's not small, it will still be cozy and enjoyable. We are aiming for that, and there's no reason why we couldn't keep it that way. We're THAT good! :-)))
