Unfortunately some people who may consider themselves atheists believe in other superstitious nonsense.

It cant be a coincidence that the more educated you are the more likely you are to be non religious.

Going back in time there were probably always nonbelievers.  Maybe it spurred the Enlightenment period, which unfortunately hasn't taken hold yet.
